Mission Statement:

To create and foster a spirit of understanding among all people for humanitarian needs by providing voluntary services through community involvement. The Lions motto is "We Serve".

Founding:

The Alachua Lions Club opened its doors in 1931 and is part of Lions International, the largest service club in the world. Lions International has over 1.3 million members in 205 countries and geographical locations all over the world.

Service:

We have sponsored Alachua Scouting for 71 years, and also sponsor Literacy Nights at the Alachua Library, and annual White Cane Walks. We provide college scholarships to Alachua High school seniors. We also provide eye exams and glasses, and hearing aids to needy individuals. We provide tutors for the local Partners in Education program and we support eye and hearing organizations, and will continue to do so.

Specifically, our Scout Troop 88 in 2011 had 10 Scouts reach the rank of Eagle Scout and each received a $100 Savings Bond. We have helped high school seniors go to college by awarding them a $1000 scholarship for the 1st year. We support our FFA club with a $500 donation each year.

All donations to our Foundation are used to serve the needy in our community, to fight blindness, hearings lost, diabetes, and help our youth grow to be productive adults. We support over 10 organizations that supply Guide and Hearing dogs, and other assistance to sight-impaired and hearing-impaired individuals.

Activities:

The Lions Club’s fundraising and community service activities include: The Cattleman’s Banquet (which has been held for more than 70 years and is the oldest, continuous Lions fundraiser in Florida), diabetes screenings at both the Alachua Spring and Fall Festivals, and an annual White Cane Law Awareness Walk.  The Lions also participate in Alachua's Christmas parade and Christmas drawing.

Fundraising:

The Alachua Lions Club is fully self-supporting, and not a penny of the money raised at our events benefits the club itself. Lions take great pride in the fact that 100% of the monies raised from the public is given back to the public. The Lions take care of club expenses through the club dues and with other personal funds.

Lions Clubs International is the world's largest service club organization with more than 1.4 million members in approximately 46,000 clubs in more than 200 countries and geographical areas around the world.
