The Austin Capital City Lions Club was chartered by the International Association of Lions Clubs August 12, 1967, on the campus of Huston-Tillotson University. Past International Director, Past District Governaor E. B. "Tex" Mayer initiated the founding of the club. The West Austin Lions Club was sponsor. Austin Capital City Lions was chartered with 56 community minded men who were dedicated to the ideals of Lionism. The club has the distinction of being the first predominately Black-American club chartered in the State of Texas and the United States. Today, the club has both male and female members. The late Virgil C. Lott, a local attorney, served as the club's first president.
Lions are an international network of 1.3 million men and women in 205 countries and geographic areas who work together to answer the needs that challenge communities around the world.
