2012  Peace Poster Contest

The Lions Club International Peace Poster Contest encourages students age 11-13 to think about world peace and to creatively express what it means to them using pictures rather than words.  In 2010-11, over 350,000 children from 65 countries participated; many of these children have never known peace.  Blacksburg Host Lions Club has sponsored this contest for 15 years with sixth and seventh grade students at Blacksburg Middle School.  Over 200 students in art classes of Lee Worley, Linda Olin, and Linda Hinson entered the local contest in 2011-12 which had a theme of “Children Know Peace”.  Seventh Grade winners were: first Vera Villanueva, second Fiona Carter-Tod, and third Nathaniel Lester.  Vera’s poster placed second in the multi-district contest.  Sixth Grade winners were: first Kasey Adamo, second Ben Wynn, and third Isabelle de Sturler.  These six students received a savings bond and Blacksburg Middle School received a donation for the Art Department.  These posters will be printed on note cards that can be purchased from the Blacksburg Host Lions Club by contacting Lion Dick Schmidt (540-552-1590, rschmidt@vt.edu).

 About Blacksburg Host Lions Club

Blacksburg, Virginia

PURPOSE: Dedicated to the service of community, state, and country, with particular emphasis on the prevention of blindness, the conservation of sight, and the conservation of hearing. The Club's purpose is stated succinctly by the motto of all members of LIONS INTERNATIONAL --
 "WE SERVE."

The Blacksburg Host Lions Club was chartered by Lions International in 1925, and has given continuous service to the community since that time. The Club celebrated its 75th anniversary March 13, 2000. Since receiving its charter, the Club has sponsored the organization of three other Lions Clubs: In 1932, it sponsored the Pearisburg Lions Club, in 1942, the Christiansburg Lions Club, and the Blacksburg Breakfast Lions Club in 1972. When the second Blacksburg Lions club was chartered, the Blacksburg Lions Club became known as the Blacksburg Host Lions Club.

The Club participates in various fund raising activities to support its service activities. All funds raised go to support those service activities (club projects).

Thanks for visiting our home page, and thanks to all of you who support Lions Clubs the world over. With your help, the gift of sight or hearing can be given to thousands of deserving people.
