2008-2009 Service Activities

The Blacksburg Host Lions Club supports many worthy charities during a typical year. During fiscal 2008-2009, the Club participated in the following service activities:

  • Purchased eyeglasses for 32 needy people.
  • Supported Leader Dogs for the Blind, in Rochester, Michigan.
  • Supported the Old Dominion Eye Foundation, Richmond, Virginia.
  • Collected 947 pairs of used eyeglasses for the Roanoke Lions Eyeglass Recycling Center.
  • Collected 3 hearing aids for the Roanoke Lions Eyeglass Recycling Center.
  • Provided 59 volunteers for eye-glass recycling.
  • Contributed more than 363 man-hours (including travel time) in support of the Roanoke Lions Eyeglass Recycling Center.
  • Provided academic and athletic/sportsmanship awards to Blacksburg High School students. .
  • Provided a reader for the Voice of the Blue Ridge for visually challenged listeners.
  • Supported a Drug-Awareness program through the Blacksburg Police Department.
  • Supported Montgomery County 4-H Leadership programs.
  • Sponsored the Lions Peace Poster Contest for 6th- and 7th-grade Blacksburg Middle School students.
  • Maintained eyeglass collection boxes at the following locations:

        Blacksburg Community Center, Patrick Henry Dr

        Blacksburg YMCA, North Main St, Enter right-hand (south) door and

        walk right toward the hallway

        Blacksburg Eye Associates, 1344 South Main St, Gables Shopping

        Center

        Drysdale Eye Center, 3645 South Main St

        Precision Eyewear, Inc (Dr. Hedges), 110 professional Park off

        South Main St

        See Mark Optical, 2401 South Main St

        Steve Jacobs, Optometry, 620 North Main St
