Dear Friend,

We are writing to you today to ask for your assistance.  The Blackstone Lions Club is a 501c3 non-profit organization based here in the Blackstone Valley that was founded in 1959.  We are asking local businesses for financial donations to help us to replace our current food trailer.  This “kitchen on wheels” is used to conduct many of our fund raising events.

The Blackstone Lions Club has taken on the challenge proposed many years ago by Helen Keller to be “Knights for the Blind.”  The Lions Organization supplies eye exams, glasses, medical operations and research to find the causes and hopefully a cure for blindness.  In addition to supplying these services on the local level we provide scholarships to high school students that will be attending college and support local youth sport and scouting programs.   We have assisted people who have experienced other physical injuries and those who have suffered the loss of their family home to a fire. Many other organizations borrow the trailer for their events. It has been used to service high school band competitions, various athletic events, the Girl Scouts Annual Fall Fun Day and the Boy Scout food sale at the Woonsocket Autumnfest celebration.  We have recently seen an increase in the request to use the trailer from organizations some as far away as Walpole, MA.

Our existing trailer is a used forty foot construction trailer that was donated over thirty-five years ago.  The frequent use of the trailer to provide meals at various local events including the annual youth fishing tournament, Memorial Day parade and Safety Day has certainly taken its toll.  It is no longer feasible or cost effective to maintain the trailer so we have decided to purchase a replacement.   Our cost to buy and equip a new food trailer will be approximately $27,000.  The new model will have a cooking and storage area while being easier to tow around.  It’s lower serving window will be more convenient when serving people their food.  This is why we are asking for any donation you can make.  We believe thousands of people in the Blackstone area benefit from our current trailer and we would like to continue to provide this service.

We are planning on equipping the new trailer with a sign to thank our major contributors who give one thousand dollars or more.  Enclosed please find pictures of the present trailer in use at a recent Memorial Day celebration.  We hope you will consider helping us with this community project and we look forward to working with you.

Yours in volunteerism,
