Since it was chartered in November 1942, the Lions Club of Bracebridge has been active in the community and surrounding area. Some of the community projects, which involve significant contributions include: South Muskoka Hospital, Annie Williams Park, Bracebridge Library, Victoria Street School, Centennial Centre, Bracebridge Fire Department, Bracebridge Fall Fair and the Arena.
Over the years the Club has been deeply committed to the youth of our area, providing drug awareness programmes for the local schools and financially assisting Big Sisters and Big Brothers, Girl Guides and Scouts, the Block Parent Programs, and youth sporting teams. Ongoing programmes include public speaking contests for young people, a yearly bursary to Bracebridge and Muskoka Lakes Secondary School, funds to send local children to camp and financial assistance for the Community Policing Halloween Dance. We have also sponsored the Bracebridge Air Cadets and the Bracebridge Lions Public School Band.
Local groups benefiting from the Lions assistance are the Manna Food Bank which operates out of the Lions Hall without charge; the Salvation Army which receives assistance with their Cheer Kettles drive; the seniors and retirement home residents who enjoy parties, entertainment and a Dial-a-Bus which the Lions sponsored for many years; the Heart and Stroke Foundation, and the local Diabetes Association.
The Lions of Bracebridge have been very active outside the community assisting with building the CNIB Camp on Lake Joseph, the Camp for the Deaf at Parry Sound, the Dialysis Camp in Dorset, and Camp Huronda in Huntsville for children suffering from diabetes. Money has also been sent to organizations across Canada and around the world when disaster relief was required. Thousands of people around the world have been helped by donations make by the Bracebridge Lions to Lions Clubs International Foundation for their humanitarian work.
Funds to provide assistance to these organizations are raised from Bingos, our Annual Steak BBQ on the Saturday of the August long weekend (started in 1967), our bottle drives and yard salet; selling CNIB crocuses, draw tickets, and running food booths at the Fall Fair and other functions.
The Lions of Bracebridge continue to live up to our motto
