Meetings

As a group of men and women we join together to raise money for various charities.  We choose which charities to support, most of which are of a local nature, whilst others have a national or international aspect.

In 2010-11, the previous President's chosen main charity was Bristol Children's Help Society - who organise and run Barton Children's Centre for the benefit of hundreds of deprived and disadvantaged children who wouldn't otherwise get a break from the pressures of their daily lives.

The new President's chosen charity for 2011-12 is the Chescombe Trust, now based in Patchway.  Further information can be found on the "Events & Meetings in 2011" page under the report on the "Handover to the New President".

We applied for a grant in 2010-11 from the Bob & Joy Cook Memorial Trust on behalf of a local family who have a young girl with physical handicaps.  We received a £420 donation from the fund which we were pleased to hand on to the family to enable her parents to take her and her brothers on a much-needed holiday.  Their picture is now in our "Photo Gallery".

Local charities we have also helped include:

  • Abigail's Wheelchair Appeal

  • Avon Riding Centre for the Disabled

  • Caring at Christmas

  • Children's Hospice South West

  • Elmfield School for the Deaf

  • Great Western Air Ambulance

  • Rapid UK (international rescue group based in Gloucester)
  • Hop, Skip & Jump South West

  • Southmead Children's Centre

National & International Charities include:

  • Bob Cook Disabled Games

  • Edu Kits (School in a Box)

  • Sight-Savers Since 1980, Bristol Brunel Lions Club has contributed donations resulting in the sponsorship of sixty-nine Eye Camps in the Lions Sight-Savers Comprehensive Eye Service programme in India. This has provided treatment for sight threatening conditions; corrected refractive errors; protected those vulnerable to blindness and provided schooling or community programmes for those irreversibly blind.
