The Cabrillo Host Lions Club was established in the Aptos California area in 1961. Aptos is a small community near Monterey Bay, about 80 miles south of San Francisco, California. The Cabrillo name is in honor of Joao Rodrigues Cabrillo, a Spanish (or Portugese) explorer who in 1542 was the first European to navigate the coast of present day California.
The Cabrillo Lions recently celebrated the Fiftieth Anniversary of their 1961 origin. Two of the original 1961 Charter Members, Dave Chamberlain and Tom Schmida, are still active members of the club.
Lions are an international network of 1.3 million men and women in 205 countries and geographic areas who work together to answer the needs that challenge communities around the world.
