The Cabrillo Host Lions Club was established in the Aptos California area in 1961. Aptos is a small community near Monterey Bay, about 80 miles south of San Francisco, California. The Cabrillo name is in honor of Joao Rodrigues Cabrillo, a Spanish (or Portugese) explorer who in 1542 was the first European to navigate the coast of present day California. http://CabrilloHostLions.org
The Cabrillo Host Lions Club is included in Lions Disctrict 4C6, which covers most of Santa Clara County, California, as well as Santa Cruz, Monterey, and San Benito Counties. http://lions4c6.org
The Cabrillo Host Lions Club is also part of the worldwide Lions Club International, an organization of over 40,000 Lions clubs in over 200 countries. http://lionsclubs
Mission: To empower volunteers to serve their communities, meet humanitarian needs, and promote international understanding through the Lions Club programs. We strive to improve the quality of life for people in need, including those who are visually impaired, by aiding and promoting health, education, and environmental sustainability. California Lions Club Student Speaker Contest 2023-2024.Jillian Weisner, a Senior, at Aptos High has taken the first step to winning scholarships for college by winning a local competition sponsored by the Cabrillo Host Lions Club. Weisner’s speech was selected by a panel of 3 judges based on originality, main points being supported by evidence, conclusion, emphasis, voice control enunciation, pronunciation, sincerity, enthusiasm, poise, cohesive effort, logic, organization, speaker persuasiveness, and adhering to the topic, “For a Better World- What Would YOU Change?”. The judging was held on January 25, 2024, at the Aptos Village Clubhouse.
Weisner will advance through the district’s levels, to compete at the multiple district state level of the competition if she is to accrue scholarships worth $10,000. We will be roaring for her!
The runner up is a Junior at Aptos High, Mia Parello.
