Chester Lions celebrate 50 years of achievement

A DINNER to mark 50 years of achievement of the Chester Lions charity was held in April. The 50th birthday  event was held at the Pavilion Suite, Chester Racecourse on Saturday 17th April 2010. It took a look back to 1917 in America when a group of business men and professionals  formed to serve their local community by helping the less fortunate.

After the Second World War, the Lions expanded into Europe and the UK,

When Chester Lions started in 1960 there were very few clubs in England and none in Scotland but since then Lions have spread their wings throughout the UK and the World and with 1.4 million members in 200 countries, Lions is the world's largest service organisation.

Over the last 50 years Chester Lions has raised around £2 million and about 90% has been used in support of charitable causes in the local area with the remainder helping international projects such as Water Wells, Eye camps and major disasters.

In 2009 Chester Lions major charity fund raising events included the London Marathon, The Ladies Driving Challenge and "Fireworks at the Racecourse".

Guests attending the celebratory dinner included Lion Phill Nathan MBE, former international director of Lions, the Lord Mayor of Chester Cllr John Ebo and the Lady Mayoress, District Governor Lion Frank Marnell and wife Paula, and Mrs Edna Speed MBE from the Chester charity Save the Family.

More than 250 guests attended.

Chester Lions are always looking for new members. Anyone interested in finding out more call on 01244 679876 or email info@chesterlions.co.uk
