LIONS CLUB OF CHRIST CHURCH WEST
The Lions Club of Christ Church West consists of a small but dedicated group of individuals who are committed to serving the community.
It was 1992, when Lions Club International decided to end its Lioness Club program. The then Barbados South Lioness Club took the option to form a new Lions Club. So it was on the 25th of November, 1992 that the Lions Club of Christ Church West was chartered.
The Charter President was Lion John Bourne, the guiding Lion Carl Browne and the Sponsoring Club was Lions Club Barbados South.
The Lions Club of Christ Church West works extensively with the elderly. We provide items for their daily care, make community visits and host an annual luncheon and Christmas party.
(Lion President, Alison Bishop is seen in photo above with guests at seniors' luncheon 2011).
Currently, we are assisting with the refurbishment of the recreational room at the Vauxhall Senior Citizens Village.
We also consider education and youth development as a priority. The club donates uniforms, stationery and other school supplies to needy students and promotes healthy nutrition through the donation of fresh fruits to our area schools. We supply bookmarks, designed by Lion Gracelyn Wiles, to improve literacy in our primary students and we provide prizes annually for our schools' graduations.
We are very committed to health promotion and conduct events to educate and screen the public, including the disabled, for conditions like diabetes and HIV. Each year, our members take part in the pink ribbon drive to promote breast cancer awareness and do projects to assist the HIV food bank.
Sight preservation is also a focal point and we collect used eyeglasses and have contributed to the work of glaucoma awareness this lionistic year.
Environmental projects include tree-planting for Arbor day and we continue to strive to address the needs of the community in a changing world.
