The Derby Noon Lions Club held its first organizational meeting on August 12, 2009, with 10 prospective members.   Attendance and enthusiasm continued to grow and the club submitted its charter application and was chartered on December 3, 2009.  On January 22, 2010, the club held its Charter Night ceremonies with 24 members.  The club now has 22 members with an average age in the low 40s.

This new club has already been involved in several service projects.  The club’s first official project was Sight Day and members collected $158.90.  In November the club helped with Wichita radio station B-98’s Thanksgiving turkey drive with food and donations supporting the Open Door organization.  The club also sponsored an hour on the KZSN 102.1 Christmas Toy-A-Thon.

In December, the club adopted a family in conjunction with Derby’s Operation Holiday and raised more than $370 to provide food, clothing, and gifts for a local family.   In February 2010, several members volunteered their time to help with Derby High School’s Reality Store.  Members have also set out three eyeglass collection boxes at local businesses.  The new club served as parade coordinator for the 2010 Derby Days Festival, and also supported the Derby Summer Fest event at High Park in August 2010.

Guiding Lions are Dan and DeAnne Heersche along with Charlie Cadwell of the sponsoring Mulvane Lions Club.  Co-sponsors are the original Derby Lions Club with club president Margaret Noller and the late PDG Jim Riley also providing guidance.
