FINAL RACE INSTRUCTIONS:

Racers,

I hope everyone is getting fired up for the race tomorrow.  I want to thank all of you who preregistered for what is surely to be a great event.  The weather is looking fantastic and hopefully the real hot weather will hold off until later in the day.  There are a few things that I want to go over before the race.

You are all encouraged to bring your family along to cheer you and the other athletes on.  Everyone is welcome to stay after the race and make use of the town beach for the day.  Please remember your helmets as you will not be allowed to compete without them.

We are happy to announce that Pedal Power Bike Shop will be available prior to the start of the race for any mechanical issues you might have with your bike.  Swim caps will be handed out at registration.  The following are a few other instructions I want to go over with everyone:

RACE INSTRUCTIONS

  • Racers only in the transition area.
  • Race instructions will be provided at 8:45 at the start area. The start is at the far end of the beach.
  • All women and relays will start first followed by the men
  • Racers must swim counterclockwise around two buoys that are located in front of the pavilion and lifeguard station. Out, parallel to the beach, and back in near the transition area.  Buoys must be kept to your left as you approach them.
  • Leaving the water racers must run across the grass into transition area where your bikes will be located.
  • The bike heat consists of 1 lap, you will head out of the town beach heading northeast on East Haddam Colchester Turnpike towards Mott Ln.
  • Be advised the roads are open to traffic and all laws of the road must be followed.  There will be several volunteers and signs on the course but please proceed with caution.
  • Your helmet must be fastened before you leave the transition area.  When you exit the transition area, cross the road before getting onto your bike.  Be aware that the course starts with a slight up hill so have your bike in an easier gear for the start.
  • At 3.5 miles there is a very steep downhill with a sharp right bend at the bottom of the hill.  It is marked with signs.
  • As you return to the town beach and are riding on the causeway you will crossover into the left lane and dismount your bike at the designated area.
  • Enter the transition area the same way you did after completing the swim.
  • Park your bikes at the bike rack and once again exit the town beach heading northeast on East Haddam Colchester Turnpike.
  • The run is an out and back run, all runners should run against traffic.
  • There are two water stops on the run course, the first at the 1 mile marker which can also be utilized on your way back as well as a water stop at the turn around.
  • The finish will be at the entrance to the town beach.
  • This event will be scored by Platt Systems using the Champion Chip Timing System. All competitors will be issued a rental computer chip which is attached to the ankle using a Velcro strap and worn throughout the race. All rental chips must be returned at the finish line. The chip number must match the bib number.
  • Relay members should stay in the transition area when switching chips.
  • All finishers should have their bib number clearly displayed in front of them upon finishing
  • Awards will be done an hour after the first racer crosses the line.
  • Awards will be held underneath the pavilion.
  • Results will be posted at www.plattsys.com
  • The course is open to traffic, please be aware.
  • Passing of cyclists should be done on the left, slower riders please stay to the right.

We want everyone to have a safe and enjoyable race.  We will have plenty of volunteers on hand to assist with any questions you might have.  If you should have any questions prior to the race, feel free to email me at EastHaddamLions@gmail.com.
Registration will open at 7:00a.m.  I've included directions below.  There is plenty of parking at the event but we encourage carpooling if possible.
