2022-2023 Annual Awards and Installation Banquet

The Eugene Downtown Lions Club’s annual Awards and Installation Banquet was held on June 15th, 2022 at the Shadow Hills Country Club. This marked the first formal Awards and Installation in-person gathering since 2019. Lion Judith Grosenick was again the “MC” for the evening and kept us on our toes with comments and laughter. She welcomed everyone and then introduced Lion Tim Chuey for the invocation. Before the invocation, he read the names of the Lions who have passed away in the last three years. A moment of silence was held in their honor. The invocation was the Prayer of St. Francis which is a favorite of our former Club Chaplain Lion Shirley Foster.

Lion Judith introduced the Lions seated at the head table. Lion Jim (Newt) Newton, his wife Lion Sharon Newton, Gene Norton husband of Lion Karen Norton, Lion Karen Norton, Kathy Coon wife of Lion District Governor Lynn Coon, and Lion District Governor Lynn Coon.

Lion President Karen Norton then presented the awards. Presidential Appreciation Awards were presented to Lions Tim Chuey, Leah Hawes, and Susan Pfanner. Lions Diane Landon and Jeff Musgrove were not present to accept their awards. The Spirit of Service Awards were presented to Lions Chuck Blanchard and Jim Koch. Vision and Fellowship awards were given to Lions Joan Vaughan and Tom McCann. A Progressive Melvin Jones Fellowship Award was presented to Lion Sharon Newton. (Progressive because it is the second one she received.) Newly elected President Jim (Newt) Newton is this year’s “Lion of the Year.”

Lion “Cub of the Year” was awarded to Lion Ted Fox who received his award at a later meeting. Lion Judith Grosenick was the recipient of the Helen Keller Award. Lion Teri Yerton was given The Ed Gear Award. A Lions Walking Stick was presented to Lion Jim Origliosso. The walking stick belonged to the late Lion Mack Follmer.

Lion Past International Director Ed Gear Presided over the Installation of the Board of Directors and new Officers for the Lions year 2022-2023.

The officers for the new Lions year 2022-2023 are Lions: President Jim Newton, 1st VP James Koch, Secretary Sharon Newton, Treasurer Teri Yerton, Tail Twister Judith Grosenick, Lion Tamer Susan Pfanner. Directors for 2022-2023 are Lions: Chuck Blanchard, Carol Casciato, Jim Mueller, Joan Vaughan, Bruce Curtis, Leah Hawes, Tom Mc Cann, and Ted Fox.

Immediate Past President Lion Karen Norton gave her farewell speech as President. She said “Being the Eugene Downtown Lions Club President (for the second time) has been an honor. What a great Board of Directors.” She brought a gift bag for the Board.

Newly Installed Lion President Jim (Newt) Newton started his address to the members by describing the Lions logo with the Lion heads facing opposite directions. One is looking to the past and the other to the future. We need to look at the past but build differently for the future. Lion Newt said he will make mistakes, but the club will help him through them.

The two Presidents exchanged their new Presidential Pins to wrap up the evening.
