Garberville Lions Celebrate 2nd Year as Chartered Club

 

On October 3, 2011, the Garberville Lions celebrated their second year as a chartered Lions Club. Lions and their guests enjoyed an "Around the World" pot luck dinner. Among the guests were District Governor Jean Roybal and 1st Vice Governor Ben Anderson.

District Governor Roybal acquainted the club with International President Wing-Kun Tan. She related the story of his inspiration to serve. She also issued the challenge to Garberville Lions to plant trees during the current Lion Club year. 

Garberville Lions embraced the challenge and pledged toplant one tree per member during the leadership of President Tan.

Garberville Lions Club Receives Visit from District Governor and 1st Vice District Governor

 

 

 

On October 18, the Garberville Lions Club was visited by Kertice Poon the District 4-C2

Governor and Jean C Roybal the 1st Vice Governor of District 4 2C. Both District Governor Poon and 1st Vice Governor Roybal are members of the Novato, California Lions Club. Immediate Past District Governor and current Regional Chair Marty Van Zandt, and Eel River Chair Arlene Werner and visiting community members were also in attendance.

 

The Garberville Lions began the evening with a hamburger barbeque with Richard Thompson serving as the grill master. The meeting began with Garberville Lions Club President, Starla Widner presenting Richard Thompson with an award for his service in many Lions Club service  activities. 

 

District Governor Poon addressed the Garberville Lions with a message of volunteerism. Lions Clubs are founded upon the principles of Liberty, Intelligence, Our Nation’s Safety; with the Motto “We Serve.”  Each Lions Club adopts the Lions vision statement “To be the global leader in community and humanitarian service” and the Mission Statement “To empower volunteers to serve their communities, meet humanitarian needs, encourage peace and promote international understanding through Lions clubs.”

 

District Governor Poon reported that the Lions Club is the largest international service organization with 45,000 local clubs and 3.5 million members in 206 countries. She also reported that 2010-2011 International President Sid L. Scruggs of Vass, North Carolina has adopted theme “A Beacon of Hope in 2010-2011. A Beacon of Hope, expresses the thought that there are more than 1.35 million lighthouses in 206 countries. Lions members who will continue to light the way, and serve as beacons of hope.”

 

Lions Clubs in answer to Helen Keller’s challenge issued when she attended the 1925 International Lions Convention, Lions have been “knights of the blind in the crusade against darkness.” 

 

District Governor Poon encouraged the Garberville Lions Club for their active participation in the community. The Garberville Lions Club received its charter August 30, 2009 and adopted the Garberville Town Square as its first service project. Garberville Lions sponsored a T-Ball team. The Garberville Lions assisted Youth Alive by contributing to the workshop held last spring and suicide prevention fundraiser in August.  Garberville Lions worked the front gate at the 4th of July Community Picnic and fireworks display. Lions Club members also assisted in the Redwood Summer Games held by Community Corner Stone.
