Ex-NFL Player Gives Powerful Anti-drug Message
Alvin Powel is a former NFL offensive lineman for the Miami Dolphins and the Seattle Seahawks. At 6-foot-5, 320 pounds, he was an imposing figure on the football field. Alvin fell prey to the disease of addiction and is now recovered. He went from a $20,000 a week job to living on the street, steeling to feed his drug habit. In the process he lost over 100 pounds. He knows how kids and other people get started on drugs, why they stay on the drugs, and what the drugs do to them. More importantly, he knows how to help people quit their habit, and how to prevent kids from ever starting.
Alvin lives on Montreal, and has devoted the past 10 years to the prevention of drug and substance abuse, as well as to helping those in crises who are suffering from the disease of addiction. He does this work through the Saving Station Foundation, a non-profit organization dedicated to the prevention of substance abuse by providing the best possible prevention and recovery activities, strategies and programs.
Alvin spoke at the regular meeting of the Greely Lions Club, attended by members of the Barrhaven, Manotick, and Osgoode Lions Clubs. He was presented with a donation from the Greely Lions toward his Saving Station Foundation. To learn more about Alvin and the Saving Station Foundation visit www.savingstationfoundation.com.
