Highwood Lions Club Projects

Every 18 months or so our club staffs a casino. As well we raise funds providing food service at various events throughout the year including Canada Day, the September River City Car Classic, the Pickleball Tournament, and the Little Britches Rodeo parade. Here's our food service crew ready to use an awesome mobile kitchen.

We invest the proceeds of the casino and our food service earnings in important cultural, health and social supports here in High River.

Beyond money our members pitch in with our volunteer time to support events and service groups here in town.

Here are some of the highlights of our projects.

George Lane Park - the Heart of High River

Light Up the Park. We work with the Rotary Club to put up a fantastic Christmas light display in the park.

George Lane Park Campground. We staff and maintain the 57 site campground in the park. The campground is open from May 1st through September. In 2017 Our campground was named campground of the year. For more information including info on the group camping facility check out the campground website.

George Lane Bandstand was built by our club. It is the venue for our summer Bandstand Sundays program. Every Sunday through July and August we host a free concert in the park. You can see the programs we offered last season and can look for our line up for 2020 sometime in May or June at the Summer Bandstand page.

We Love a Parade

We have excellent parades here in High River. We work with the local Rotary Club to mount these events.

Little Britches Rodeo Parade - Rain or shine the Little Britches Rodeo Parade is not to be missed. Marching bands from around the province perform in our parade as a kind of dress rehearsal for the Stampede. Our contribution is feeding all the bands. We cook and serve Beef on a Bun free to all the parade band members and sell our buns to the general public. In excess of 1000 meals are served on parade day.

The Santa Claus Parade - Our excellent Santa Claus Parade is another event where we assist the Rotary Club. Lions cook and serve over 600 hot dogs free of charge to parade attendees.

Highwood Lions Music Festival

The Highwood Lions Music Festival takes place over three weeks in March and April each year. This acclaimed festival gives an opportunity for over 1000 musicians to display their talents. The festival is open to people of all ages from Fort McLeod to Calgary.

The Highwood Lions Club donates $9,500 annually to this popular event and provides volunteer help to staff it. For more info please check out the Festival website.

Our Shared Vision

Lions are known throughout the world for their work to improve the lives of the visually impaired and prevent avoidable blindness.

Our club helps fund research into eyesight diseases and supports the Lions Eye Bank. We donated $40,000 towards the High River Hospital's cataract surgery unit.

We brought together Jiggs, a specially trained service dog, and Wes Willoughby. Now Wes can navigate around town more easily and safely.

Along with other Lions Clubs in Southern Alberta we've collected and sorted over 30,000 pairs of eyeglasses and sent them to developing countries.

And That's Not All

We sell poppies for the Legion, call bingo weekly at the two senior's lodges and help staff the Christmas Salvation Army fund raising.

Highwood Lions have donated over $36,000 this year to the Salvation Army, the museum, the AIM society, the Handibus, Special Olympics, MS Society, Music Festival, Juvenile Diabetes,Camp HeHoHa, Literacy for Life, Solace Grief Society and Dreams Take Flight.

The largest new recipient was a $10,000 donation to  the Arts and Culture Centre to be built in High River.
