HISTORY OF THE WAIAKEA LIONS CLUB

The Waiakea Lions Club was organized on May 2, 1950 by Lion Alexander K. Bell and chartered by the International Assn of Lions Club on June 8, 1950.

The sponsoring club was Hilo Lions Club.  The Charter membership was composed of 93 service - minded men.  Of this total, 56 transferred from the Hilo Lion Club plus 37 new Lions to create the 24th Lions Club in District 50.

The Charter Club president was Lion Charles "Chicken" Auld who wrote the Waiakea Lions Club fight song.  The Waiakea Lions Club is one of the few clubs in District 50 with a fight song.

On September 15, 2009, the Waiakea Lions Club swore in their first two women Lions.

Today, the annual Chuckwagon Breakfast is our major fund-raiser in which all proceeds are used in the support of organizations like the Hawaii Food Basket.
