Lions Respond to Tragedy in Joplin

A BIG THANK YOU to all who participated in supporting the relief efforts from recent tragedies!

The recent tornado outbreak in the U.S. killed at least 280 people, left thousands homeless and caused millions of dollars in damage. As always, our members are bringing aid to the people affected by this disaster. LCIF is mobilizing US$250,000 to fund Lions' relief efforts in Alabama, Arkansas, Georgia, Mississippi, Missouri, North Carolina, Tennessee and Virginia. LCIF also awarded US$160,000 in emergency grants to affected districts.

The Independence Host Club brought food, water, and other donations to Grace Christian Assembly for those in Joplin Missouri.  What is most needed now is blood and money donations. If you have questions,  please contact Lion Greg at 254-3620.

Club Recognizes Member Lion Jim as Local Author

For anyone that has ever wondered what the life of an American deep-cover international spy is like, Lion James A. Everett shares his story of recruitment and training by the CIA, and his eventual untimely dismissal. This autobiographical work takes the reader from Everett's initiation and training in this arm of government work, through his disillusionment after his cover is blown during the Watergate scandal when Congressional hearings expose his true CIA relationship. In his post-CIA life, he gains a deeper understanding of the political and often devious activities of Empire America, and becomes a peace activist critical of the CIA. Lion Jim has been writing his entire life and has been published in numerous magazines and newspapers in a wide variety of genres. He has been writing a weekly opinion column in a daily newspaper for five years and has been recognized with numerous awards, including Kansas City's International Citizen of the Year Award, and the Crescent Peace Society's Annual Peace Award.

Independence Host Lions Club

Recognizes Westminster Hall

Lion Bob Lockwood and Lion President Greg Gilliam recently recognized the Independence Presbyterian Church for their generosity in allowing Westminster Hall to be used by the Independence Host Lions Club for more than twenty years for the annual Pancake day held each December. A $100.00 check was donated by the Club to support the church's mission fund. We greatly appreciate Westminster Hall being available for this significant and important annual fundraising event!

Provides Funding for Audio Testing Equipment

The Independence School District Health Services Department recently received $3900 from the Independence Lions Host Club to go toward purchasing six audio-testing units to be used in schools across the district.

Recognizes HyVee Grocery Stores

An Appreciation Plaque was recently presented by Club President Greg Gilliam to 23rd Street HyVee for their partnership with our Club in making many of our projects a success. Specifically, the HyVee location is used by the Club as a collection point for eyeglasses collection and for the Annual Feed the Hungary Campaign. In addition, HyVee is very generous in supporting the annual Pancake Day. Thank you HyVee management and employees for your strong support to the community!

Lions Clubs International is the world's largest service club organization. We have 1.35 million members in more than 45,000 clubs in more than 206 countries and geographic areas.

Lions have a dynamic history. Founded in 1917, we are best known for fighting blindness, but we also volunteer for many different kinds of community projects – including caring for the environment, feeding the hungry and aiding seniors and the disabled.

Lions give sight. By conducting vision screenings, equipping hospitals and clinics, distributing medicine and raising awareness of eye disease, Lions work toward their mission of providing vision for all. We have extended our commitment to sight conservation through countless local efforts and through our international SightFirst Program, which works to eradicate blindness.

Lions serve youth. Our community projects often support local children and schools through scholarships, recreation and mentoring. Internationally, we offer many programs, including the Peace Poster Contest, Youth Camps and Exchange and Lions Quest.

Our
Leo Program provides the youth of the world with an opportunity for personal development through volunteering. There are approximately 144,000 Leos and 5,700 Leo clubs in more than 140 countries worldwide.

Lions award grants. Since 1968, the Lions Clubs International Foundation (LCIF) has awarded more than US$700 million in grants to support Lions humanitarian projects around the world. LCIF was also ranked the number one nongovernmental organization in a 2007 study by The Financial Times.

Lions help during disasters. Together, our Foundation and Lions are helping communities following natural disasters by providing for immediate needs such as food, water, clothing and medical supplies – and aiding in long-term reconstruction.

Lions are active. Our motto is "We Serve." Lions are part of a global service network, doing whatever is necessary to help our local communities.
