SSG Kenneth R. VanGiesin Patriot Award

In May, 2011 the Kane Lions Club began what we called the Patriot Award. This Award recognizes our high school seniors who choose to enlist in the United States Military. Our thought was that at the graduation ceremony, these young men and women watch their fellow students receive scholarships and be recognized and applauded. College-bound students go off and begin their lives, become classroom educated, and join the workforce. The graduates who were about to take the oath to serve, protect, and defend our great Country receive no recognition. This award gives that recognition along with financial assistance, with a $500 award, to help soon to be enlistees prepare.

Tragically on July 18, 2011, Kane High School Alumni SSG Kenneth R. VanGiesen was KIA in support of Operation Enduring Freedom, Afghanistan. Shortly thereafter, the Kane Lions Club renamed the Patriot Award in his honor and assumed proud stewardship of this Award. Our club pledges to perform fund raising campaigns, look for support from our community and other organizations, and accept memorial and other donations to continue this important award for many years to come.

We Kane Lions suggest that other clubs consider a similar award so that those in there communities are recognized for their upcoming sacrifice and service to America.
