KUALA KRAI, KELANTAN, MALAYSIA

Kuala Krai is a small town located in Central region of Kelantan which is a state in the North eastern part of Peninsula Malaysia. It is about 44 miles from the capital of Kelantan, Kota Bharu. This town has a population of about 120,000, of which 90% are Malays and the rest are a mixture of Chinese, Indians and other races.

The famous landmarks in Kuala Krai are :

Bradley Steps

Functioning as transportation base linking Kuala Krai and several villages below and above town which is not accessible by land transport.It is also used to measure water level during the flood season.The stairs which has 81 steps is important to some settlements as a communication link with Kuala Krai till today.

Sultan Ismail Suspension Bridge

 

The Sultan Ismail Bridge or popularly known as "Gertak Gantung" (suspension bridge) became an important link between Kota Bharu and Kuala Krai during the colonial time. The bridge is 70 feet long and situated at KM 9 Jalan Kuala Krai Road to Kota Bharu. It was built in 1932 and officiated by HRH Sultan Ismail on April 19, 1932. In the Fourth Malaysia Plan, the road system in the state of Kelantan was upgraded and the Sultan Ismail Bridge is no longer in use after the construction of a new bridge next to it in 1986. However, "Gertak Gantung" is still preserved as a historical heritage for the future generations.

Lata Berangin Falls/Lata Tek Falls

Located about 20km from Kuala Krai. There are 2 beautiful waterfalls, Lata Rek and Lata Berangin. Lata Rek is clearly signposted while for Lata Berangin you must know the way, as there is no signage at all. After visiting Lata Rek, you continue on the road D227 for about 11 km where you turn right at the junction. Another 8 km you reach a bridge. Just after the bridge, turn right into a very narrow tar road. This road ends after 1.5 km at the waterfall.
