The Lake Mason Lions Club provided Brett Laage of Lone Rock with a “Vision Eye” projector which makes reading and seeing small details much easier for those with vision impairment. Twenty-four year-old Laage was diagnosed with rod and cone dystrophy nearly eight years ago and, since there is no real treatment for the illness, has had to adjust his life accordingly. He no longer holds the glass factory job he once held. He can no longer drive a vehicle and he is now categorized as “legally blind.”
With his wife, Amanda, and his two children, he continues to seek vocational training that he hopes will allow him to work again at a job he enjoys. The device makes reading studies much easier.
The Vision Eye projector is able to zoom in and focus on any material placed in front of it, projecting that image to a television screen. The expensive device was donated to the Lake Mason Lions Club by former members of the club, Jon and Kathy Epstein, with the understanding that it would be given for use to someone in the area who demonstrates a need for such a machine. Since nobody nearby made inquiry regarding the device, it was decided by the club that, rather than have it sitting unused, it should be loaned to someone in need outside the area. Mr. Laage is aware of this situation and will relinquish his use of the device if necessary. He says, however, that he has found that by using it he sees details of photos and items placed in front of it he never could see before.
