The Madrid Lions Club meets the 1st and 3rd Tuesday of the month @ 6:30PM
The Madrid Lions Board of Directors meet the 3rd Tuesday @ 5:45PM
The Club meetings are held at the Madrid Homes Communities Main Campus building in their dinning room. A meal is served before the meeting.
History:
The first Lions Club was founded in 1917 in Chicago. The Madrid Lions Club was founded in 1929, since it's beginnings the Madrid Lions have supported and sponsored groups and organizations like the Madrid Boy Scouts and Cub Scouts troops, Tiger Tots Preschool, Madrid Performing Arts Council, College Scholarships for Madrid high school seniors, Boone County 4-H Clubs and Boone County Prevention & Services. Other groups and organizations like Pony Express, Lions Summer Camp, Camp Hertko Hollow, Iowa Lions Foundation, Iowa Lions "Coming to Your Senses", Lions Club International & Leader Dogs for the Blind.
Lions Club International is the largest service organization in the world with over 1.3 million members in 205 countries. In 1925, Helen Keller addressed the Lions international convention in Cedar Point, Ohio, USA. She challenged Lions to become "knights of the blind in the crusade against darkness". From that time, Lions clubs have been actively involved in service to the blind and visually impaired.
This year the Madrid Lions collected 372 pairs of used eyeglasses for the "Recycle for Sight" project and gave out $10, 360.28 in contributions to local organizations and Lion supported projects.
"Lions Recycle for Sight" drop boxes can be found at the Madrid Public Library, Madrid City Hall and the Madrid Home.You can also give your used eye glasses to any Lions member.
