Meetings

Meeting Minutes - May 1 2018

Congratulations to JenBen and Luke on the birth of Christian, who was born late Sunday night!!  A picture of the little tyke is below.

Golf Outing...to be held at Bishop's Bay on Monday, June 4.  All members and spouses are encouraged to attend at least the dinner at the end of the day, if you aren't available to assist.  Mark your calendars and get the word out for sponsors.

Fish Fry and officer swearing-in.   A date needs to be determined.  Probably June 12 or June 19, poolside at Harbor.  Details to follow.  Mark your calendars.  Members should bring a dish to pass.

Good NeighborFest.  August 24-26. This year the payout will probably be done totally by hours worked for each organization.  Invite your friends and family members to be a Lion for the weekend.  There will be a lot of hours to be filled.  Mark your calendars.

We are looking for some club members to take on some tasks, none of them too onerous, but still needing to be done.   To wit:

Highway cleanup coordinator.  We ought to be scheduling the annual spring cleanup sometime soon.

Charterer Organization Rep to the Cub Scout Pack.   This requires very little effort but thrown in with it is also the job of coordinator of the used eyeglass collection, since the Cubs do the actual pickup.

Meeting site reservation specialist.   Our room was not available tonight, so we either need to find a different place to meet or we need to be better at reserving the room at Mid Town for our needs.

Upcoming meeting thoughts:
no formal meeting in June, since the golf outing and fish fry will take the place of it.

Whether or not there will be a July meeting is to be determined.  The August meeting will probably consist of signing up for the Fest weekend.  Don't forget, we moved the meeting night to the first Monday of each month, starting at 7:00 PM at Mid Town.

All of the above items were approved by a vote of 1-0, since I was the only one there.  Good thing 1st VP-elect Conrad was dissuaded from attending.  He was invited to the fish fry instead.

Middleton Lions Minutes: May 9th, 2017

Golf Outing

  • The Event Sponsorships are good to go, but we would definitely welcome more hole sponsors: $500 or $1000 to include a four-some.
  • We currently have 15 four-somes signed up with room for more.
  • Raffle and Auction items needed. Attached to the meeting minutes email is a list of donations from last year’s outing. Those in black have already been reupped for this year’s outing while those in red are still opportunities to be collected. Items in $25-$50 denominations will be included in the raffle while larger donations will be put into the silent auction. Donated four-somes with carts from golf courses are ideal items for the auction, as our supper club/restaurant dinners for 4 (or even 2 for a date night).
  • We could use volunteers to help during registration the morning off (11am), hole events during the outing, and also to help with the raffle and auction afterwards.
  • If you would like to golf, have donated items, would like to help with the event, or would like to join us for dinner, please let Todd (todd@harborathletic.com) or myself know.
  • The Golf Committee will be meeting this Friday, May 12th, 4PM at the Missouri Tavern.

Highway Clean-Up

  • Saturday May 20th, 8AM. Meet in Game Time’s parking lot (corner of Hwy 12 and CTY Rd K).

Middleton Lions Minutes: April 11th, 2017

Secretary’s Report

  • The Lions Pride Endowment Fund is hosting their 10th Annual Pride Shoot Sporting Clays Fundraiser on June 10th, at Milford Hills Hunt Club in Johnson Creek. Let me know if you would like to volunteer or register to shoot ($125 includes clays, lunch, dinner, and beer), and I can get you more information.
  • If you are interested in attending the 2017 Wisconsin Lions Multiple District 27 Convention in La Crosse on May 6&7 as a voting delegate, let me know by April 20, and I will get you registered as a delegate. Our club is entitled to 3 delegates.

Good Neighbor Fest Update

  • It is official, the food court concept will be incorporated into this upcoming GNF. Our Italian Beef Sandwiches, French Fries, and Cheese Curds will accompany burgers (cheese and veggie as well), brats, hot dogs, pizza, chicken sandwiches and fingers, tator tots, etc… Our club has on average accounted for just under a quarter of all profits made by the service clubs offering food at GNF, and efforts will be made to retain that portion of food court profits going forward provided we as a club fill our yet to be determined allotment of food court staffing hours. With the food court, there will be no need to maintain the fryer mobile, and as such it (and all non-essential items within it) will be given away saving the club $35 per month in storage fees. Also, it looks like there will be no need for parade workers or volunteers to set-up the grounds.

Golf Outing

  • The Golf Outing will be June 5 at Bishops Bay Country Club. Attached to the minutes email is the flyer. As always, any sponsors that we as a club can add to the golf outing directly improves the bottom line, as do any items we can add to either the auction. Don’t be afraid to ask- even gift cards that can be given away as hole prizes are a great addition to the outing.
  • The Golf Committee will meet on Friday, April 28th. Stay tuned for information as to where.

Restoring Hope Transplant House Update

  • The Capital Campaign goal for the RHTH was $500k. It looks like the goal will be exceeded with funds reaching $502k.

Visit from Future District Governor Jodi Burmeister

  • Reminder about the Centennial Parade in Chicago on July 1st, and the available bus (see previous minutes for more information).
  • The statewide Lions are hosting a drive to collect eye glasses with the goal to collect more than 250k pairs. If you have old glasses to donate, please either visit the Hy-Vee on East Washington between 9-11am on May 3rd, or get to Al within the next week.

Fish Fry

  • Please mark your calendars: Harbor Poolside- June 20th at 5pm social hour with fish at 6pm.

New Member

  • Please welcome Robin Finco as our newest member.

Next Meeting: FRIDAY APRIL 28TH, 4PM- LOCATION TO BE DECIDED. There will be no regularly scheduled club meeting on April 25th.

Middleton Lions Club minutes March 28, 2017

Jody Burmester, the future District Governor, will be at our next meeting April 11th. Please put it on your calendar and attend if you can.

GNF update- the GNF is slowly making progress on the ‘Food Court’ implementation. Logistics and profit sharing are currently being worked out. If you would like to help shape , talk with Al who is co-chairing the committee. And thanks to Al for stepping up and making sure the Lions’ interest is well represented and looked out for.

Brandon’s send-off will be 4PM this Friday at the Craftsman Table and Tap. See you all there.

Al is in the Middleton Times Tribune for his selfless act of kindness- making the Middleton Lions Look Good and Proud. Scroll to ‘Page 2’ on the linked page below for the story.

A heads-up regarding the Centennial Parade during the LCI Convention:

We still have seats available on the 27-D1 Bus to the Centennial Parade.  We will leave Madison at 5 am and return at 7 pm on July 1st.  This is just the parade so no registration for the convention is required.  What a wonderful way to see Lions from all over the world as we celebrate the centennial.  Attached (to minutes email) is the flyer for the convention and on the far right side is the bus information.  Remember, if I do not have your monies you do not have a spot on the bus.  If we still have spots available, I will be opening it up to all Lions in the state at State Convention, May 4-6.  So hurry!

NEXT MEETING: APRIL 11th, 7:30 PM at Mid Town Pub

Middleton Lions Club minutes March 14, 2017

Good Neighbor Festival Update- the food court concept is still progressing with the GNF planning committee, and provided the city votes to okay the change, we will be doing away with the fry mobile and switching over to the food court. The revenue sharing formula has yet to be decided on, and this will be an important factor going forward. The next GNF meeting is Monday, March 27th- 6pm at the Middleton Fire Station. The committee is looking for ideas and help, so if you are interested please feel free to attend.

Guest at April 11th Meeting- our 1st Vice District Governor, Jody Burmeister, will be attending our April 11th meeting. Please make an effort to make the meeting so that we can have a good showing for her visit.

NEXT MEETING: MARCH 28th

Middleton Lions Club minutes Feb. 28, 2017

Mayoral Candidate visit

Gurdip Brar stopped by to introduce himself and to discuss any issues that may be of interest to members.  To those that don't know him, he's been extremely active in many phases of volunteerism in Middleton since 1982 including Kiwanis, Boy Scouts, Scouting for Food, Key Club founder, youth soccer, Good NeighborFest, Friends of Pheasant Branch, and more.  He's currently a city councilman with a strong inclination towards fiscal conservatism, often asking tough questions about expenditures including WHY.

He has a PhD in Genetics and is a retired researcher from AgriCetus.  Wife Dorothy teaches at the UW, daughter Gloria is a professor at UC-Berkeley, and son Victor is an assistant professor in Physics at the UW.  He help start some of the gifted student programs in the MCPASD system after seeing his children being bored with a vanilla curriculum.  So the man gets things done!!!

There will be two debates with the other mayoral candidate, Hans Hilbert, on March 8 at 7:00 pm at the Village Green and 3/15 at the high school PAC at 2:15 pm.  The election will be on April 4.

Secretary/Treasurer's reports

No reports, other than some of our budgetary commitments are being taken care of.

Golf Outing

We're still in search of hole sponsors, lunch sponsors, and dinner sponsors.  The golfer list is filling in nicely.  Notifications of past contributors to the Wine and Cheese event were sent out informing them of our scheduling changes to see if they will contribute to the silent auction at the golf event.

The event is Monday, June 5 at Bishops Bay.  All members are encouraged to come to dinner after the golfing is over, estimated cost of $20 per person.

Slate of Officers

These are mostly filled in with Jennifer Briggs (who will always be JenBen to me)😁  stepping up as President, Ben Zietlow returning as Secretary, and Francine Ernst returning as Treasurer.  Thanks to these folks for their commitment and support to the club.  We are still in search for a Vice President.  While that doesn't necessarily mean promotion into the presidency after a year, ideally it does.  JenBen would like to develop an internal training program for those members aspiring to an officer position so that it's not something new or unknown.  I've held every position except Treasurer, and trust me folks....it's not overwhelming when you have good fellow officers and support.  So.... is there any interest out there????

Good Neighbor Festival

The idea to develop a food court staffed by the 7 organizations who serve food is still a work in progress.  Ways to make the proceeds equitable is a major concern, as is the staffing and organization of the food court itself.  First and foremost is the issue of getting enough electricity into the permanent shelter area.  If this can be accomplished before the event, the new format could be implemented in 2017.  If not, it may be delayed into 2018 or not implemented at all.  In any case, we (Lions or the GNF) will need to purchase new fryers.  If the Lions buy them, we want the GNF to commit to purchase them from us if the new format is adopted.   Stay tuned.  We'll know more after the 3/13 GNF trustee meeting, so please plan to attend the 3/14 Lions meeting to find out what has transpired. 7:30 pm at the MidTown Tavern.

2017 Fish Fry

Tentatively set for Tuesday, June 20.  Poolside at Harbor Athletic Club as usual, starting any time after 5 pm.

Middleton Lions Minutes: February 14th, 2017

Secretary’s Report

  • With Brandon stepping down as President, Jennifer will be taking his place. We need a new Vice President. If you are interested, please reach out to myself or Jennifer for information.
  • Pete Cerniglia from the Cross Plains Lions has shared an updated Capital Campaign schedule- it is attached to the minutes email.
  • The District Convention is March 10th and 11th. Please see the link below to register. If you are planning on attending, let me know and I will get you listed as a delegate. http://www.quickeventplanner.com/cgi/page.cgi?_id=202068

Treasurer’s Report

  • Checks to go out this month: $300 to Eye Bank, $2k to Lions Camp, and $200 to Lions Foundation.
  • The budget is looking good- we have roughly $11.8k still to go out in donations for the 2016-2017 fiscal year with the revenues/profits from the golf outing in June.
  • On the Administration side, we had $3.8k in revenue, have paid out $1.9k, leaving $1.9k with only the raffle license renewal fee yet to be paid.

Good Neighbor Fest Update

  • Big news on the GNF front. The festival has decided to move in the direction of a ‘food court’ type setting. All of the specifics have yet to be worked out. However, it means we will no longer be a separate entity at the festival situated in the fryer mobile. More information to come at future meetings.

New Member

  • Please welcome Darrin Sharp as our newest member.

Next Meeting: TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 28TH AT MID TOWN PUB – 7:30

Middleton Lions Minutes | December 13, 2016

Treasury Report:

  • We have $731 coming in from gumball sales

Raffle Update:

  • We have decided not to run a cash raffle

Golf Outing:

  • We will be at Bishops Bay again this year. The golf outing will be June 5th. Please reach out to potential sponsors- the earlier the better. With no wine and cheese event this year, we are hoping to bring in even more money than last year to make up for the lost revenue.

Steak Fry:

  • The date has been set for Wednesday, January 18th. Cost for Lions will be $20 to cover costs. Friends of the Lions, as always, will be invited at no cost. This is a great opportunity to invite potential sponsors for the golf outing and spend some time in a social setting. We are working on signage and other materials to show who benefits from the work we do and money we raise.

Next Meeting: Friday, January 6th at 4pm.

Middleton Lions | Minutes for November 22, 2016

The steak fry is tentatively scheduled for January 11th, so mark your calendars. We will use this as the kick-off for a cash raffle in the place of the wine and cheese event. Stay tuned for more information.

Our next meeting will be December 13th at Midtown. It will be a Golf Committee Meeting.

Middleton Lions | Minutes for October 25, 2016

Real quick meeting. A couple of things to note. One, dues. The club is still missing dues, please send them to Francine. Two, a decision on the replacing the fryers is on hold pending a GNF announcement in January. The quote to replace them came in at $2k. Lastly, if anyone is interested in networking to find new club members, talk to Brandon or Jen. We have had quite a few drops over the past 12 months, and need to bring in some new members to replace the old.

NEXT MEETING: NOVEMBER 8th, 7:30 @ Midtown.

Middleton Lions | Minutes for October 11, 2016

  • Our club supported 13 campers this past summer at Camp Rosholt. There were a total of 1,258 campers.

  • The club will be sending out $3k in donations this month.

Golf Outing

  • Start thinking about and approaching potential sponsors and auction items for the Golf Outing.

NEXT MEETING: Saturday HWY Clean-up, then Tuesday October 25th, 7:30 at Midtown Pub

MIDDLETON LIONS MINUTES | 9/27/2016

Secretary’s Report:

Our Region 2 Meeting is Wed, Oct 19 at the Coliseum Bar & Banquet, 232 E Olin Ave, Madison. 6:30 Social, 7:00 Dinner, and 7:30 Meeting. Meal cost is $15/attendee payable that evening in cash or check made out to Lions 27-D1. This unique Regional Meeting is designed to provide each attendee with the opportunity to interact with other Lions from around the Region, to recognize Clubs that earned Centennial Service Challenge Awards and to learn more about Lion Legacy Projects. The evening will also include a discussion about how clubs can identify prospective legacy projects. Please RSVP 1 week prior to the session you are attending to 1st VDG Jodi Burmester - 608-444-9123 or jodi.burmester@gmail.com

Treasurer’s Report:

Please pay your dues- $100 to Francine. She will take straight cash or check. Numbers from GNF: grossed $10,531 with expenses of $6,179 for profit of $4,352. Checks to go out this month: $1,500 to M.O.M.; $500 to Combat Blindness; $500 to Lion’s Pride; $1,000 to Reach-a-Child. Next meeting will include a vote on the budget.

GNF:

Overall, the GNF went well. Next year we will be looking to adjust the food prices to help offset our increased expenses. The fryers in the Fryer Mobile have surpassed their useful life. A rough estimate to have them replaced is $2000- we will be discussing this as part of the budget meeting next month.

Christmas Party:

We will not be having a Christmas Party, and instead again have a January Steak Fry. More info to come.

Wine Tasting and Golf Outing:

No one has volunteered to head up the Wine Tasting Event, so we will forego that fundraiser ($7,700 last year) in 2017 and instead put forth those efforts towards the Golf Outing. Right now is the best time to approach businesses for large donations such as the various $500 and $1000 sponsorship opportunities. Please contact Todd, Brandon, or myself if you have any questions. Also, remember to invite sponsors and other friends of the Middleton Lions to the Steak Fry.

Highway Clean-up:

9am on Saturday, October 15th at The Missouri Tavern.

Cross Plains Oktoberfest Dinner:

Saturday October 8 from 5-10pm at the American Legion in Cross Plains. Tickets are $20 for adults, $10 for children 8-12, and children under 8 are free. Live Music provided, tickets are available at the door, and each ticket includes an entry into a 50’’ Smart TV.

NEXT MEETING: OCTOBER 11TH, 7:30 AT MID-TOWN PUB

Will be voting on the budget.

Middleton Lions 09/13/16

Finance Report

Golf             Revenue $25,409  Expenses  $13,744   Net  $11,666  ($4k more than 2015)).  Kudos to Todd, Ben, and the rest of the committee on a job very well done.

GNF            Revenue $10.531   Net (est).  $4,400.   Revenues are up but expenses are up significantly in a number of areas.

We bought a deep fryer that we thought would work but it turned out to be more of a small scale unit than commercial as we expected.  Is anyone interested in purchasing it?  It's a nice unit and we'll offer it as a screaming deal at $200.

Checking account balance = $14,277.  Fall checks have not yet been written.

We had a total of 4 in attendance, out of a membership roster of 36.  To generate better attendance, we still are interested in pursuing an audio conferencing service so that members who can't physically attend can call into the service and hear everything that's being discussed.

The next meeting is scheduled for Sept. 27 at the MidTown Tap at 7:30.  The Oct 11 meeting is scheduled to include discussion of, and approval of the 2016/2017.  This will be very important as there are numerous budget reductions being proposed as a result of the possible discontinuation of the annual Wine and Cheese Cork and Cleaver event.   If there is any interest (consider a tag-team if necessary) in continuing this popular event, please contact Brandon, Ben, Sara, Melissa, or JenBen.  Otherwise those impacted are obviously those to whom we make donations.
