THE SASKATOON MILLENNIUM LIONS CLUB

 

HISTORY

 

 

Chartered June 22, 1999

 

Chartered with 22 members: Gerald Adams (deceased), Brenda Armstrong, Tom Armstrong, Max Berscheid, Darren Boser, Lorin Byrnes, Wilf Eichorst (deceased), Phil Fincati, Robb Hanson, Veronica Hintze, Cheryl Grummett, Ken Grummett, Deleyne Kerfoot, Henry Letourneau, Trudy Letourneau, Denis Milhousen, Donna Morton, Ken Morton, Kelly Regush, Joanne Remillard, Roly Remillard, Trevor Waring. We are in Zone 6 along with clubs from Borden, Colonsay, Dundurn,  Kenaston, Lanigan, Martensville, Saskatoon Centennial, Saskatoon Downtown, Saskatoon Millennium, Saskatoon Nutana, Colonsay Lioness, Lanigan Lioness.

We are in District 5SKN and Multiple District 5 which includes Saskatchewan, North Dakota and South Dakota.

The Saskatoon Millennium Lions Clubs Projects:

Since the charter of the club we have:

Served the pre walk breakfast and the post walk lunch for the Multiple Sclerosis walk in the spring and up to 2003 the bike run during the summer.

Help along with the other 3 Saskatoon clubs host the annual golf tournament with all the proceeds going to the Canadian National Institute for the Blind.

Donated to the Lions Foundation of Canada for the purchase of a 3 guide dogs for three sight-impaired persons and a Special Skills Dog (money donated by Lion Lorin and Shirley Byrnes).  All of our present members are “Life Members” of the Lions Foundation of Canada. A $100.00 donation to the Lions Foundation of Canada is required to become a life member. Donation for a Special Skills Dog in December 2009.

Funded a ski trip and a bowling event for the sight-impaired students of Lakeridge School.

Drove and coached for the sight impaired bowling league on Saturday evening during the winter and coached at the provincial rolloffs in the Spring.

Help fund and sponsor the Saskatoon Lions Band and the Saskatoon Lions Speed Skating Club.

Donate to the annual Lions Cavalcade for Diabetes.

Work with the other 3 Saskatoon Lions Clubs to organize and fund the Annual Christmas Dinner for the Blind which provides our sight impaired friends a night out with a turkey supper, entertainment and plenty of door prizes. The Canadian National Institute for the Blind sends out invitations to their clients for this has been an annual event for over 65 years. 

Donated to the Canadian National Institute for the Blind for the Digital Library.

Bought 2 batteries for a handicap scooter for a fellow Lion’s wife.

Sold tickets for a Gail Adams print.

Work bingo at the City Centre Bingo Hall.

Donated to the Jubilee Residence (Porteous Lodge) for sitting room furniture and electric fireplace for the residents.

Sell barbecue hamburgers and canned pop at the west side Canadian Tire Store during the summer.

Act as  Santa Claus at the Market Mall during the Christmas season.

Barbecue hamburgers and hotdogs for the Canadian Pacific Railway’s family assistance program in June.

Donate funds for the Saskatoon School Sight Program, a program that purchases 2 pair of glasses for students who cannot afford them, one pair stays at the school even if other pair is lost or destroyed.

Sell mega Cash raffle tickets in the malls and at the Annual Saskatoon exhibition to fund the Lions Skate Park and now the Flight Rehabilitation Centre at the Forestry Farm Zoo.

Donated some funds for a young lad to travel to the Mayo Clinic for medical testing. 

Dealing Texas Hold’em Poker tournaments for our club and as a joint project with the Nutana and Centennial Lions Clubs. Our funds have been donated to Camp Easter Seal and Saskatoon Lions Band.

Help organize and work at the Pasta Nights for our Zone.

Sat on the Host Committee for the 2008 USA/Canada Lions Leadership Forum and several members attended and helped at the forum.

Donated money to City Park Collegiate for a field trip to Wanuskawin Park.

Donated money to the Friendship Inn.

Hold Texas Hold'em Poker tournaments from October to May with the 2 other Saskatoon clubs. The funds we have raised we donated to Camp Easter Seal and the Saskatoon School Sight Project.

Donate to the Children's Wish Foundation.

Donated to Haitian Earthquake Relief.

Donated to the Saskatchewan Children's Hospital Foundation.

Help provide a motorized scooter for an MS sufferer so he can get around on his own, and also Lions Ken and Cheryl donated a walker for his use.

Sold, stamped passports and provided ID security for annual Folkfest Irish Pavillion.

Donated to Japan's earthquake relief (LCIF)

Donated to Christchurch New Zealand's earthquake relief (LCIF).

Donated to Slave Lake fire Relief (LCIF).
