Lions Club of Moratuwa Weera Puran Appu Pura was chartered by the Lions Clubs International on 26th October 2012. The club belongs to Lions Clubs International District 306 A1 Sri Lanka The Club was extended by Past Council chairperson  Lion Cassian M Fernando. The Club is named after a National Hero Puran Appu who laid his life in a national upheaval to gain independence to then Ceylon Now Sri Lanka.

The Club has 26 members with four lady members

The Club meets on every second Saturday of the month

At the beginning of the year the club carried out a massive humanitarian project by finding over rupees seven hundred thousand[ US$ 5400] to perform an operation of a cancer patient A poor girl from Moratuwa Nilakshi Dananjalie was found to be suffering from a rare cancer disease OSTEOSARCOMA and if she was to survive her leg had to be amputated. The Club collected the funds needed from Sri Lankans living abroad and the operation was successfully completed. To make it possible for her to make a livelihood another sum of rupees sentry thousandUS$550] was collected and a  new sewing machine was donated to her These funds too were collected from Sri Lankans living abroad

There are three important continuous projects of the club namely sponsoring at least one poor person every month for a cataract operation at the Lions Gift of Sight Hospital Panadura Sri Lanka It costs the club rupees 3580 [US$30] per operation.

 The club has adopted 12 elderly families where the children are living separately and there are no persons to look after the elders. The club offers meals one day each week which costs the club rupees 20000[US$155] The club has arranged with 6 other well-wishers to feed these families for the balance 6 days of the week

The club in association with the Lunawa Hospital, the National Council for the Prevention of Dangerous Drugs, the Narcotic Bureau of the Sri Lanka Police And the Association for Rehabilitation of Drug Addicts, visits identified families of drug addicts twice a week and bring the persons to the hospital where necessary treatment is given and conduct programs to educate these victims the need to develop skills to say no to drugs. The club also carries out distributing leaflets seeking the corporation of the public to report drug peddlers. Parallel to these programs the club also conducts seminars in schools to develop skills in the youth to say no to drugs and alcohol.

The club has carried out two mega Health camps so far this year. One in a remote borderline village where the village has been ruined by the war that existed for over 30 years. Screening of patients for diabetics, distribution of new spectacles after screening, treating patients with kidney diseases due to heavy mineral content in portable water, distribution of herbal tooth paste were some of the areas covered. Three schools were given books worth over more than fifty thousand rupees.

The second mega health camp was conducted in Rajagiriya a part of the Colombo Cosmopolitan area where families of Government Servants serving in the area were offered similar facilities.

The club had a family outing at the National Sanctuary Wilpathuuwa where the families spend two days inside the jungle and was fortunate to see several wild animals.

The club is planning another mega health camp  on the 28rth December to commemorate the 10th anniversary of Tsunami disaster that destroyed the houses of over 89000 families and witnessed the world’s biggest train disaster where 14440 passengers died with the rising waves of the Tsunami. Fifty four survivors of the tragedy will participate in thee program

There will be donation of blood, screening for cataract operations and distribution of free spectacles,. Carrying out laboratory tests and specialist doctors attending on children, expectant mothers, those suffering from heart and lung ailments. Free medicine will be dispensed to the patients   

The club will have two public relations cum fund raising projects A wheel’s on Parade  where vintage cars will be driven from Colombo to Moratuwa and end up with a musical show and the other a talent show for the lions lion ladies and Leos were the best Karaoke Singers in each group will be identified

Club needs funds for cataract operations and also for rehabilitation of drug addicts
