Wilmer Eye Institute Open House

This is a great opportunity to hear about new technology that may bring sight back to the blind. For more information on what Dr. Gislin Dagnelie at the Lions Vision Research and Rehabilitation Center has been working on for the past twenty (20) years, please click on the web link below:

http://www.cbsnews.com/8301-18563_162-57522740/new-technology-may bring-sight-back-to-blind/

The Wilmer Eye Institute at Johns Hopkins Hospital extends an invitation to all Lions to come and tour the new facility on November 17th at 9:30 AM. They are providing a free lunch.   If interested in attending, please reply by October 24th to 410-955-1883.

RAFFLE

Kindle Fire HD

International President Wayne Madden has an emphasis on increasing literacy, and it was suggested that we sell raffle tickets for a Kindle Fire HD. The drawing will be held at the December 10th club meeting.

A special thanks goes to Lion Bob Fike, Herald Printing, for printing and donating the tickets for this raffle. All profits from this raffle will go into the Activities Account to support our projects.

Ticket cost(s): 1 ticket for $1.00 or 6 tickets for $5.00. Contact Membership Chair Bridgette Karalewitz for tickets (tel: 304-209-9334.

Remember to VOTE on Tuesday,

November 6, 2012.

Many of you have asked about the District Governor pin, and I asked our District 22-W pin coordinator for a supply. I will have them on Sunday at the Veterans Day Celebration and also at the meeting. If any of you would like to purchase one they sell for $3.00.

FUNDRAISERS

BROOMS/MOPS

At the October 15th meeting the club decided to sell brooms as one of its fundraisers to help support our projects. Since we are a new club, we are continually seeking new ways to raise funds to help support the needs in our community, the district and the world.

A huge thanks to our sponsor club, LaVale Lions, for helping us get started with the broom fundraiser. The cost of a kitchen broom is $9.00 and the garage broom cost is $11.00.

If you know of anyone who is interested in purchasing either of these items, please call our Broom Sales Fundraiser Chair Kenneth Riggleman at 301-784-6028.

Lion Ken is in the process of locating areas to place our brooms for easier access to purchase. Stay tuned for future announcements from Lion Ken.

GLOBAL SERVICE ACTION CAMPAIGN

Relieving the Hunger

At our next meeting, we will decide on a project for December and January to help relieve hunger. According to the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, every day, nearly one billion people worldwide go hungry ..."One in seven people in the world go to bed hungry each night."

Give this some thought and bring your ideas for helping in our community to the next meeting.

President Jack purchases the first broom and adds some money to our Activities Account!

EYE GLASS COLLECTION

The club is collecting eye glasses for recycling. We have placed an eye glass recycle box at Lion Karen Kelly’s place of employment: First United Bank. If any of you know of somewhere else we can place a container, please contact Vision Chair Theresa Boal (301-359-3031).

THANK YOU, LIONS DIANA AND MATT COOPER

ME ME D’S CATERING

When I first met Lion Diana Cooper I knew I had met a person who I had a kindred spirit with. Lion Diana radiates love and concern for her fellowman through her voice and in her face. I was familiar with Diana and Matt’s catering from previous events where Me Me D’s served their delicious food! In talking with Diana about becoming a Lion, she was so happy to be asked, and I was thrilled she wanted to join our Lions Club.

Lion Diana expressed a deep desire to do something for the community, because as she said, "this community has been very good to us. I want to give back." She mentioned providing food for an event that would benefit people who have served their community and fellowman. She spoke of the Wounded Warriors and the Veterans. One idea she has had in her mind for a while was to do something on Veterans Day. I asked her if the North Branch Lions Club could help (of course we didn’t have any money in our accounts yet, but she thought this would be a great opportunity for our club to become known in the community). This is how we became involved with this upcoming special Veterans celebration. Lion Diana and I talked about how the Westernport American Legion was opening up with a new commander and this seemed to be "The Place" to host the event. Commander Buck Lough and Veteran Ernie Layman were contacted and "It Is On!"

Diana came up with the menu: Turkey with dressing, ham, mashed potatoes w/gravy, cole slaw, green beans, rolls, dessert, tea and coffee. This is being provided by Lions Matt and Diana. What a better way to follow our Motto, "We Serve," than to help the Coopers serve our Heroes!

Thank you, Lions Diana and Matt. Lion Sandy
