National Capital Purina Walk for Dog Guides
Ottawa South joined with other clubs in the greater Ottawa area to support the 1st annual National Capital Purina Walk for Dog Guides, held on Sunday October 16, 2011. The approximately 5 km walk took place along the Rideau River, starting at De La Salle High School and through New Edinburgh Park to finish at the Rockcliffe Retirement Residence on Porter Island. A total of $13,684.68 was raised, making this the most successful first-time walk ever in Canada. Participants and volunteer helpers enjoyed BBQ burgers and soft drinks, and prizes were awarded for achieving various fundraising targets. Mayor Jim Watsom attended the closing ceremonies and issued an official Proclamation for the event.

All proceeds from the walk go to the Lions Foundation of Canada (LFC), a registered charitable foundation founded by the Lions Clubs of Canada. LFC operates Dog Guides Canada, a school which breeds, trains and provides Dog Guides at no cost to Canadians having visual, hearing or other physical or medical disabilities through 5 on-going programs; Canine Vision, Hearing Ear, Special Skills (physical disabilities), Seizure Response and Autism Assistance. All these programs are funded solely through private donations. There are absolutely no costs to qualified clients receiving a service dog either for the animal itself or for the transportation, meals and accommodation expenses and several weeks of training required with their new companion at the LFC training facility in Oakville.

Thanks to all those who came out to show how our community cares by helping to provide service animals to Canadians, to our sponsors and especially to the Rockcliffe Retirement Residence for all their support!

Run for the Cure BBQ
In cooperation with local businesses near our "clubhouse", we help run an annual fall Corn Roast and Barbeque in support of the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation's Run for the Cure Campaign. Thanks to those who turned out, enjoyed custom-cooked burgers, hot dogs, corn on the cob, cup cakes and cold drinks, and especially those who donated so generously to this year's 4th annual event on Saturday Sept 17, 2011.

Blind Anglers International Tournament (BAIT)
The Blind Anglers International Tournament provides the legally blind with the opportunity to experience the fun and excitement of competing in a high-class fishing tournament each spring while paired with professional sport fishermen. Our club has supported BAIT, both financially and with volunteer manpower, since its inception in 1989.

RCMP Sunset Ceremonies
We help support the annual Royal Canadian Mounted Police production of the popular Canadian Sunset Ceremonies - a free, family-oriented display of horsemanship that includes the world-famous Musical Ride, the fast-paced Equestrian Abilities Show and Mounted Arms Display. The event takes place over several days in June, rain or shine, at the RCMP Stables located on St. Laurent Blvd. at the Canadian Police College.

Boy Scouts of Canada
We have supported the charter of the 11th Ottawa (Hunt Club) Troop of the Boy Scouts of Canada since 1992.

Lions Camp Dorset
We provide financial support to Lion's Camp Dorset, a resort in Ontario, Canada, for Ontarians on kidney dialysis. The availability of an onsite dialysis unit allows guests to experience the great outdoors, get back to nature, and enjoy a relaxing atmosphere away from the stresses of everyday life.
Eyeglass Recycling
Ever since the challenge by Helen Keller to become "Knights of the Blind", Lions Clubs International have always put a strong emphasis on vision, both in providing support for preventing avoidable blindness and restoring sight for people around the world. Our club collects used, unwanted eyeglasses at a number of collection boxes located throughout the area. If you have any old pairs of eyeglasses lying around your home, please contact us for the location of the collection box nearest you. We will recycle each pair received and ensure they get to a person in need. Please help give to others the Gift of Sight!
