Who the Rivanna Lions are...

The first Lions Club was organized in Chicago, IL, in 1917 by a local businessman named Melvin Jones. The Lions organization has grown into the World's largest service organization, the International Association of Lions Clubs, with a membership of more than 1,400,000 men and women in over 44,000 clubs representing 208 countries and geographic units.

In 1925, Helen Keller addressed the Lions at their International Convention and challenged them to become "Knights of the Blind in the crusade against darkness." Since that time, service to the blind and visually impaired has become one of the association's most significant activities.

A non-profit organization, the (Palmyra) Rivanna Lions Club is part of the International Association of Lions Clubs, the world’s largest service association.

The Rivanna Lions Club was established in 1998 and is the only Lions Club in Fluvanna County. Our members pledge unselfish service to our community and to those less fortunate than ourselves. Club members volunteer their time and energy to a variety of fund-raising efforts.  All profits are designated for charitable use. We support the programs of the International Association; however, our primary concern is to serve the local community.

Fund-raising activites such as our annual golf tournament,“White Cane Days”, ongoing broom sales, etc., allow the Rivanna Lions to provide support for Leader Dog School for the Blind, SAHMSU (Sight and Hearing Mobile Screening Unit), Diabetes research, Virginia Lions Hearing Foundation, Old Dominion Eye Foundation, Fluvanna County Food Bank, as well as other worthy causes as voted by the membership.

No money received from the public goes toward any of the administrative or social costs of the club. These are borne by the club members themselves through dues and assessments.
