Who we are.......

A non-profit organization, the Palmyra-Rivanna Lions Club is part of the International Association of Lions Clubs, the world’s largest service association.

The first Lions Club was organized in Chicago, IL, in 1917 by a local businessman named Melvin Jones. The Lions organization has grown into the World's largest service organization, the International Association of Lions Clubs, with a membership of more than 1,400,000 men and women in over 40,000 clubs representing 167 countries and geographic units.

The Rivanna Lions Club was established in 1998. Our members pledge unselfish service to our community and to those less fortunate than ourselves. Club members volunteer their time and energy to a variety of fund-raising efforts; all of the profits are designated for charitable uses. While we support the programs of the International Association, our primary concern is to serve the local community.

In 1925, Helen Keller addressed the Lions at their International Convention and challenged them to become "Knights of the Blind in the crusade against darkness." Since that time, service to the blind and visually impaired has become one of the association's most significant activities.

Through our annual golf tournament,“White Cane Days”, ongoing broom sales, etc., the Rivanna Lions raise funds to provide support and donations: for Leader Dog School for the blind, Sight and Hearing Screening Unit used by the Lions of our district, Diabetes research, Virginia Lions Hearing Foundation, Old Dominion Eye Bank, Fluvanna County Food Bank , Reading for the Blind and Dyslexic and other worthy causes as voted by the membership.

No money received from the public goes toward any of the administrative or social costs of the club. These are borne by the club members themselves through dues and assessments.
