Pleasant Grove Lions Club Members and Mayor Guy L. Fugal

Our Legacy

Pleasant Grove Lions Club was first charted December 11,1929 and  then  rechartered October 24, 1938.  For more than 90 years we have served our community in numerous ways.   Whether sponsoring a community fair, building pavilions, providing playground equipment in parks, or fortifying ground for a skating rink, we have been there.  Monetary grants for academic scholarships or leadership conferences are available for youth.   We provide for vision for children as well as recycling used eyeglasses for people in third world countries.    Where there is a need, there is a Lion.  WE SERVE!

 STOP TUMMY GRUMBLES!

IT'S TIME FOR OUR COMMUNITY BABY SHOWER

PLEASANT GROVE LIONS CLUB FACEBOOK PAGE

In conjunction with UNITED OF UTAH COUNTY/"WELCOME BABY" Pleasant Grove Lions Club is joining with this program to help families in the community.

The “Welcome Baby” program is a free community resource available to all families in Utah County. Our main focus is to empower and support new mothers and fathers during their transition into parenthood. We understand that becoming a new parent can be both exciting and overwhelming, and our aim is to provide assistance and guidance to parents as they navigate the challenges and joys of parenting with strength and confidence.

An “Eye” for Service

I first met Lorenia Móran Soto while vacationing in San Carlos, Mexico when I was a teenager.  She worked at the condominios where our family stayed and we instantly knew she was an amazing person.  We remained friends and fast forward thirty years to 2021 when I discovered that she and her family had a major role in volunteering and running the Lion’s Club in Guaymas, Mexico.  Since my family was looking for a service project at the time, I inquired what kinds of things they might need.  The idea of eyeglasses and school supplies came up and that year we came home and decided to give this service project a try.  Since we drive down to Mexico a couple times a year, we decided we would gather what we could and take it on our next trip in 2022.

We started with our friends and family and the members of our church and we were pleasantly surprised that we had gathered up around fifty pairs of eyeglasses, lots of school supplies, and a few hundred dollars in donations.  We knew the Lion’s Club in Guaymas would be so excited for this donation!

However, right before we were leaving for the trip to deliver our donation, I was surprised to get a phone call from Milt Taylor of the Lion’s Club in Pleasant Grove, Utah.  I didn’t even know there was a Lion’s Club in Pleasant Grove, my own city! Milt called to let me know that he had seen my flyer from someone in town that we were collecting eyeglasses.  And of course, they wanted to donate to our cause!  Little did we know, that first donation of over 1100 eye glasses would take up the entire back of my car! We were beyond thrilled despite the fact that we had to pack a lot lighter than we expected in order to accommodate this huge donation!

I don’t think anyone was more surprised than my friend Lorenia in Mexico! The Lion’s Club in Guaymas now refers to us as their “Utah friends” and we have since delivered another donation of over 1000 glasses this last August 2023, courtesy of the Pleasant Grove Lion’s Club.

It is amazing to see both of these clubs working so hard for their communities, giving back in a meaningful way and blessing the lives of those that need these services the most.  I am thankful for the support of the Lion’s Club and its members in Pleasant Grove.  If it wasn’t for them, we wouldn’t have been nearly as successful in our endeavors to help support the people of Guaymas, Mexico.

I am also grateful for the members of both the Guaymas and Pleasant Grove Lion’s Clubs who spend countless hours and personal time bringing good to others and facilitating these activities for those in need. We are thankful for all they do and hope to continue to work with both clubs in the future and hope to continue these lifelong friendships in service.

WE SERVE AROUND THE WORLD!

Lions Clubs Serve regardless wherever they are. Last week a couple from Pleasant Grove transported 815 pair of glasses to Guaymas, Mexico. These glasses were part of the service project we did on January 24, 2023. We sorted thousands of glasses to be used world wide. The Lions Cubs in Guaymas will read, clean, package the glasses. The glasses will be sent to the areas most in need.

EYES IN THE BOX

January 24, 2023 found Pleasant Grove Lions Club members sorting eyeglasses at the clubhouse. This was the first step in preparation for glasses to be dispersed for humanitarian service the Utah LIons participate in when they go to third world countries. Over a thousand glasses were sorted in an hour.  We are grateful to the following businesses for providing eyeglasses: Lindon Walmart, Orem Walmart, American Fork Walmart, Springville Walmart, Eyemart in Orem, and Utah Valley Vision Center. Sometimes other businesses and individuals will donate glasses. We have acquired thousands of glasses over the years. Eyeglasses is our major humanitarian service project. We still have many more glasses to sort. Volunteers are always welcome.

COTTON CANDY, BALLOONS, & MASKS!

We had a great response from the attendees at the Heritage Festival.  Giving away balloons and masks was a delight for the children. Youngsters of all ages (1 to 100) enjoyed the nostalgia of eating cotton candy.   The best part was combining one or two colors with a favorite flavor.   Imagine a parent's enjoyment  seeing the expression of a child getting a first taste of the sugary treat.  What an adventure eating cotton candy from a paper towel because the plastic bags and paper cones ran out.    Thank you to the Payson and Nephi Lions Clubs for helping us.  Thank you to the Heritage Festival Committee.    We look forward to our project of Warm Winter in November.  Check our website https://www.facebook.com/pleasantgrovelionsclub/

Pleasant Grove Lions Club serves. “It’s that simple. It has been since Lions Clubs began in 1917. Our clubs are places where individuals join together to give their valuable time and effort to improving their communities, and the world.”

We serve without regard to political, religious, ethical or governmental ties. Governing bodies who visibly encourage community support of fundraising efforts by Lions Clubs and other volunteer organizations foster a sense of unity in the community.

Since 1929 our service has provided parks, and pavilions. We have provided vision screening, as well as  funding for eye exams, glasses, cataract  surgeries, new prosthetic eyes, and youth scholarships. Through community fundraising efforts, we generate funds to serve.

Twenty-four local businesses supported us at the Heritage Festival, donating over 35 free raffle prizes  totaling $950.We thank Pleasant Grove City and Zeke’s Daylight Doughnuts for their support.  We thank Nephi and Payson Lions Clubs for their help and participation.   Next month we will individually name all businesses who supported us.  Thank you to  the residents who purchased doughnuts at our booth. Our moto is “We Serve”  our community from the heart.

A VISION TO HONOR THE PAST!

VETERANS MEMORIAL PARK

PLEASANT GROVE LIONS SHELTER

A vision for future generations to honor the past was started in 1955 when the veterans decided their memorial should be a  public pool and park--The Veterans Memorial Pool and Park.

In 1955 the pool was estimated to cost the city $60,000 - $70,000 or $50 per household. The cost would be less if community service groups and volunteers helped in the project.  The pool was enlarged and renovated a decade ago to better serve the community

The Pleasant Grove Lions Club build the shelter in the park from 1961-1969.   Fundraisers sponsored by the club included, public community auctions, talent show, and even raffle tickets to win meat for a half beef.   These projects provided funds for  the cement, support poles, support beams for the roof, and the galvanized roof.   With the help of  the club, volunteers, and community groups, sprinklers were installed, trees planted, and top soil spread.   In May,1969, he club built twelve wooden tables for the pavilion.

In June, 1968, the club received the D.A. Skeen Community Project Award for MD 28 District A.   The shelter was turned over to the city June 4, 1969.  For a time the Pleasant Grove Lions Club maintained the shelter.  It is now maintained by the city.

We express our gratitude to the veterans for their vision for the future generations to remember the past.   This beautiful park and pavilion provides a beautiful place to play and picnic friends and families.

PLEASANT GROVE LIONS RECYCLE FOR SIGHT

Pleasant Grove Lions Club participates in "Lions RECYCLE For Sight."
Once the used glasses are cleaned and lens prescriptions read, they are sent with humanitarian volunteer groups who visit third world and impoverished countries. The glasses become a gift of sight for individuals who have never had clear vision. Their lives are changed.

The glass frames should be in tact, no broken ear or nose pieces. The lens should be in the frames.

We cannot use old cases because they take up baggage space when traveling to other countries

Thank You!  Utah Lions Foundation

and Pleasant Grove Lions Club

With funds from the Utah Lions Foundation and our club, we were able to help a young man receive helpful treatment for kerataconus.   Part of our mission is to help individuals with vision problems to see better.

Lions have a dynamic history. Founded in 1917, we are best known for fighting blindness, but we also volunteer for many different kinds of community projects - including caring for the environment, feeding the hungry and aiding seniors and the disabled.

Lions give sight. By conducting vision screenings, equipping hospitals and clinics, distributing medicine and raising awareness of eye disease, Lions work toward their mission of providing vision for all. We have extended our commitment to sight conservation through countless local efforts and through our international SightFirst Program, which works to eradicate blindness.

Lions serve youth. Our community projects often support local children and schools through scholarships, recreation and mentoring. Internationally, we offer many programs, including the Peace Poster Contest, Youth Camps and Exchange and Lions Quest.

Our Leo Program provides the youth of the world with an opportunity for personal development through volunteering. There are approximately 144,000 Leos and 5,700 Leo clubs in more than 140 countries worldwide.

Lions award grants. Since 1968, the Lions Clubs International Foundation (LCIF) has awarded more than US$700 million in grants to support Lions humanitarian projects around the world. LCIF was also ranked the number one nongovernmental organization in a 2007 study by The Financial Times.

Lions help during disasters. Together, our Foundation and Lions are helping communities following natural disasters by providing for immediate needs such as food, water, clothing and medical supplies – and aiding in long-term reconstruction.

Lions are active. Our motto is "We Serve." Lions are part of a global service network, doing whatever is necessary to help our local communities.
