LIONS AT WORK - COMPLETED PROJECTS and EVENTS

January 15, 2011 - Western Night

The Ponce Inlet Lions Club held their annual Western Night on January 15, 2011. This dinner was to raise money for charities i.e. sight, hearing, diabetes and guide dogs. After a great dinner of B-B-Q ribs and pulled pork topped off by banana pudding for dessert we danced into the evening to the music of Double Trouble (Jim & Debbie).

Mary McConnell and Steve Smith won the best Cowgirl and Cowpoke contest. Cowpoke Steve Smith challenged one person picked by a random drawing to lasso his stuffed steer. Jean Balthazard from Sleepy Hollow, N.Y. was selected and she had 3 chances. If she completed this challenge Steve would donate $500.00 to the Ponce Inlet Lions Club, she did it on the second try. Congratulations to Jean for being such a great sport and thanks to Steve Smith for his donation.

Thanks to all who attended and helped the charities that are supported by the Ponce Inlet Lions Club. The event netted $1225.00.  The next Lion’s event will be the sock hop on April 2, 2011.

December 5, 2010  - Lions Christmas Party

A good time was had by all.  There were 34 Lions present, the net return to the treasury was $72.32.

There was a table for Lions to jot Holiday notes on cards to go to folks at a local hospice, to which many responded with personal notes.  Unwrapped new toys that were age appropriate for children 5 - 11 years old were stacked under the Christmas tree by members as they came into the room.  These toys will be provided for the needy children at Longstreet Elementary School on Peninsula Dr.

We sang Christmas carols after a great buffet style dinner, where many enjoyed talking and continuing  friendships and common interests as Lions.

October 22nd and 24th, 2010 White Cane Program

The Ponce Inlet Lions Club has been involved in the White Cane Program for the last nine years.   This project has volunteer Lions members standing outside local businesses at their entrances, asking for donations to this very worthwhile program.  100% of the donated money goes to help people who need eyeglasses or hearing aids.

According to Charlie Spitzfaden, the Lion leader this year, the Lions club of Ponce Inlet tries to schedule a White Cane Event at least twice a year.  The last event was held October 22nd and 24th, 2010, at the Walmart store and raised about $1000 for the program.  There are usually two to four shifts of people involved, two persons at each exit.  The next White Cane Event is scheduled for March, 2011.

October 16th, 2010 - Pancake breakfast at Down The Hatch.

Message from our President, Lion Jeff. "First, we had a large number of Lions that participated which gave us visibility in the community. Secondly, we elected to serve each guest that came to the function which was very much appreciated by our guests and demonstrated our motto "We Serve".  Thirdly, the venue was beautiful and finally, we learned a lesson that we could have made more if we had advertised the event more and sooner. Kudos's to all Lions that participated (see list below) with a special Kudo to Lion Simone and her staff that helped us make it as successful as it was.

The results: 65 tickets @ $5.00 = $365.00, donations or tips $15.00.  Total $380.00

Antique Boat Show:

Ponce Inlet Lions Club coordinated this event with Down the Hatch Restaurant.

The event was all day Saturday, October 2, 2010 at Down the Hatch Restaurant

Lions participating: Shirley and Mahar Okhovatian, Tom Gannaway, Jeff Follmer, Don Kraska and Jim Volz. Tyler Okhovatian, son of Shirley and Mahar, also helped.
Lion Simone Johnson, owner of the restaurant, provided significant facilities support to the Club’s operation during the Show.

The P.I. Lions Club performed all parking functions for the Antique Boat Show and asked for a donation to the Lions from all those that wished to park. The Show was a first time event for the restaurant that brought sellers and buyers together to sell or trade antique power boats. A swap meet of old and new nautical items was also conducted on the restaurant’s property adjacent to the boat show.

The Lions leaders for the event were Lion’s Jeff and Simone and the purpose was to increase awareness of what the Lions are all about as well as increase patronage at the Down the Hatch.
The Club was allowed to keep all the proceeds of the parking function which resulted in over $1,000. raised for the Club’s administrative and service funds.

Message from Past President (July 2007-June 2009) Tom Gannaway:

Many of you have joined the Lions Club of Ponce Inlet in the last two years. You may not know I was drafted and was a reluctant write-in candidate for President. Upon being elected I announced that I had two goals for our club. First, was to have fun at our meetings, introduce social functions and for our club to become an enjoyable club of which to be a member. The second was to increase our membership by recruiting new members who both wanted to have fun and to serve the community and people in need.

I believe we have achieved both of these goals over the past two years. Our club has become a friendlier, more social club in which all our Lions enjoy one another. Because we are an open friendlier club in which almost all Lions both work and play together, we have increased our membership. I believe 17 of our current membership of 41 have joined in the past two years with potentially 4 more new Lions joining in May. You become a Lion by being invited by a Lion to join. Lions Margaret Ann, Kassandra, Hazel and Jim Hinson in particular have done a wonderful job of asking their friends, neighbors and contacts to join.

I had a third unannounced goal to increase our charitable contributions while eliminating our annual draw of funds from our Foundation investment account. We have substantially increased our contributions, thanks to all the Lions that pitched in to raise the funds, and this year did not have to draw funds from the Foundation.

I want to thank every Lion for their support and hard work to make these successes possible; it’s every Lion’s achievement. I am very confident that the Lions Club of Ponce Inlet has only just begun to hit its stride. I look forward to turning the gavel over to President-elect Margaret Ann and look forward to her leadership. A good club is going to become a great club in 2009-2010 under her leadership.

Tom Gannaway, President
Lions Club of Ponce Inlet

Lion # Questions with longer answers

  1. What does being a member of the PI Lions Club mean to you?
1 Opportunity to help others
2 Lions provides me the opportunity to make a contribution to my community, to worthy charities and to people in
need through service and monetary contributions.
3 to help the people that need it
4 Being able to take part in community events/services/fund raisers that provide positive outcomes for
  individuals, groups or the community.
5 Friendship and community service; being part of a team.
6 An opportunity to serve my community.
7 The opportunity to join (and serve in) a world class organization of caring individuals located within the town that
is actively devoted  to helping those that are in need and far less fortunate than ourselves.
8 Connection to the community
9 Being part of an organization that supports thru charity ,people in the community less fortunate than ourselves
with their needs for visual aids and support and to be a contributing part of the community in which I live and work
10 Provide assistance to the blind and hearing impaired and to those folks in the community who need help
11 Opportunity to do something useful for the community as well as those less fortunate.
12 A chance to do some good while enjoying others company
13 Gives  me a chance to work with a group willing to help people in need
14 Because of my limited vision, I know how important it is to support these agencies and charities.  It brings me
pleasure to try and help others the best I can.
15 Its great to work and give to the less fortunate. It makes me feel good inside. Its also fun.
16 The Lions International Organization is one that supports a large number of groups who are or might be in need
of financial and physical support.  Our Club and it members have opportunities to contribute both locally and
outside Ponce Inlet - and I want to be a part of these efforts.
17 Being able to contribute to my community and help those in need.
18 Service to the community we live in and camaraderie with other good, like-minded  people who care about others.
19 Commitment to a common purpose. Fellowship with people I admire, respect and LIKE..

  2. What do you expect/desire to get out of being a member?
1 Be able to participate in events to help raise funds
2 An opportunity to serve my community and individuals/families in need; socialize with and enjoy the
fellowship of other Lions who also want to serve.
3 Being part of something worthwhile
4 Positive work and social interaction with other club members while working towards our goals. Also, the
opportunity to work, or engage, with the individuals whose lives we are to trying to improve.
5 Feeling that I am doing my part for the community; pride in a job well done that is appreciated by the community.
6 A way to give back to others and an opportunity to meet fellow lions in our surrounding area.
7 To join with other P.I. residents in conducting events that benefit the organizations/ services that the Lions Club
serves. Also, to develop close personal  relationships with town individuals that share my beliefs in helping others.
8 Friendship
9 Really I wish I had more time to give, I find myself in a time in my life very busy with business and family concerns,
I would not have made this commitment had I known that  I would be this strung out. I enjoy people and doing my
part. Having a son with visual challenges makes me very sensitive to the needs of citizens with disabilities.
10 Satisfaction out of helping those in need
11 Meaningful opportunities to do something useful for the community as well as those less fortunate.Opportunity
to meet like-minded people within the community, develop friendships and expand circle of local relationships.
12 Time with others I like, doing good for those who need our help.  Done locally also is important, and convenient.
13 Personal satisfaction
14 Satisfaction to be able to help people in need.
15 It's a great feeling to raise money for all the charities.
16 Support those in need, be mentors in volunteerism – and at the same time build a community.
17 Meeting people with a common interest that enjoy giving to those in need.
18 Satisfaction of helping those less fortunate
19 A vehicle through which I can contribute something, (however small on my part) to a worthy cause. I also like the
social friendship aspect, which I hadn't known existed when I joined.

  3. Are the projects/events we are now doing to provide money for our charity fundraising adequate?
9 No , I think the club needs to charge more for their events , and put more pressure on   Members
  contributors. :]                 15 Yes
16 I do not consider the two Banquets as fundraising events – they are social.  We don't get credit  4 No
for the Cubs Night Out since it is sponsored by the 1 member said Y&N, 1 no vote---> 19 Total
  Palm Coast Club.  So, NO
19 The number of projects is adequate, but I wish we could think of ways to raise more money at each one.

  4.  If inadequate above; or, if you feel there should be another type of event/project needed to raise money:
1 we have sufficient events, but new good ideas are always worthy of consideration
2 We should continually evaluate the projects to assure that they are well planned, executed and achieve their $
goal.  If not we should drop the project.  The golf tournament offers us the opportunity to more than replace our
loss of funds due to the Town's cancellation of park festivals.  We may also want to consider a tennis tournament
  at the Links.
4 I do not believe the current events are adequate. However, if we are able to implement some of the new
ideas, mentioned above, we would really be "on a roll".
5 Fundraisers have to be kept fresh.  If we can't sell out each event, then we should consider modifying it to make it
more attractive and more relevant to more people.
7 I realize that the Xmas parade is important to show unity with the town but I'm not sure if it is a significant fundraiser.
We may want to list this in a different category. Also, we may want to consider the Golf event as an activity that
  we do every other year.
9 ummmm  I will have to think about that. Basically grow the events we have and fine tune them so the club makes
more money.  Also, getting more of the community evolved .
11 My opinion is that what we do, we do very well, thanks to the dedicated (if somewhat singular) efforts of our long
term members.  I believe we are doing what we can within our very small community (market saturation), which
restrains our ability to generate additional revenues.
The golf outing generated excellent revenue because we "partnered" with the PAL and split the proceeds. This
enabled us to grow beyond our local community and reach more contributors from outside of PI. The concept of
developing partnerships with other charities has had mixed reviews, primarily regarding the aspect of
"who's in charge."  We need to reach a strategic philosphy of whether we wish to partner with others (on some
projects) at the risk of relinquishing control, or continue to remain within our community. One issue in
partnering with others would be "why would they want to partner with us.?" Something to ponder.  Another
question is whether we can do more (vertical integration) within PI. Or have we saturated the market??
We have talked about taking over the Arts and Corvette shows....opportunity??
12 We need to have better ways to motivate more people to do some of the work.  If everyone took on one thing,
we all would feel more motivated to work together in a synergistic way.  If only a few have a big load, then more
would join and volunteer.  Groups move with the crowd, which follows leadership.
15 Coupon booklets - sell 100 and raise $1000 for club. Old car show in park.
16 We need to identify either one or two of the above and concentrate on expanding the events, or add others that
would draw our new members to participate in.  We have several that require work but not much financial
rewards come back to the club.  Of course, I would like to see the golf Tournament get bigger and another idea
is to have a large raffle for $$$ i.e. win 2- 5K but the tickets are limited and are ~$25.  You get the idea.
17 Would like to see a silent auction with donated items to raise large amounts of money.

  5. Are the service projects we are now doing adequate? [Yes or No]       Members
Note: All answers are in the table, above.           16 Yes
                      3 No
                      19 Total
  6.  If inadequate above; or, if you feel there should be another type of service project:
2 We need to actually carry through and build the Braille Trail.  We could also volunteer to serve meals one evening
periodically with  HUMM.  PAL, as I understand it, is disbanded; perhaps there is an opportunity to create a local
Leo club.  We need to increase the number of people we serve through vision examinations and provision of
glasses.  The Seniors Citizen Council has offered to refer low income seniors in need of glasses to us from Ponce,
  Wilbur and the Shores.
4 Possibly, names we can get through the Conklin Center. Also, we should continue to all keep our eyes and ears open
for people in the community that may need our assistance.....as has been done in the past.
5 I think members could bring in occasional, non recurring service projects they are involved in outside their Lions
Club activities and recruit individual members to participate under our Lions Club name .
7 In my opinion, we should we need to be careful in trying to provide too many opportunities that we can't support
with our current membership. As such, we need to concentrate on the core activities that we do well.
9 In Orlando we had a group that helped with the visual disabled kids in the local schools. The teachers have
challenges with a public school integrating disabled students, which is very challenging . We could offer some
support to the local schools that have visual disabled kids in their enrollment.  Also, something close to my heart
is preemie care at a local hospital.  [have not checked into whether or not we have a preemie unit at Halifax].
Having a  preemie  is very emotional and challenging . Making some crochet booties, and caps for  the tiny small
babies and some support for the families with an outreach group would be a great thing to offer. Most preemies
have  hearing and visual challenges ahead of them .
11 I think we should have a 'young persons' (Teens) program.
12 Either taking over PAL or starting our own youth group will energize the group and gain new, younger members
who are parents of the youth.
16  – support our Neighbors in Ponce Inlet – i.e. the elderly who might need some yard work or help in their home.
It would be nice if we could get 50% of our members to physically volunteer – visibility is great advertisement.
18 Partner with PIFD to provide flu shots as we did last year and  possibly hypertension screening – many lose
  kidneys due to silent hypertension.
Also Support PAL in some form

  7.  How many events/projects should we undertake per year on average? [comments]
5 Service Projects: I think something should be happening every month but it can be an event or service that only a
handful of Lions undertake.  It doesn't have to be club-wide
Charity/Fundraisers: Adequate, I think, as long as they continue to be well attended and make us funds that we
can distribute.  Also, we should look more closely at activties with added value; for example, activities that can
generate matching funds from other sources.
9 I decline as I have not been active enough in the club to make a true honest assesment
11 Only what we think we can handle based on commitments from the membership.
18 Either b or c. I don’t think we have enough eager volunteers at this time to do one a month, that would be the ideal.

  13. Where would you prefer to meet?  Comments
9 B , Down the Hatch :]
16 C – if we can’t get the Community Center to lower the fee for our use, we should consider local restaurants – we
are presently  ‘kicked out’ 3-4 times a year from our noon meeting.

  14.  Please provide any comments or ideas that will improve our club?
1 There is a need to balance fund raising activities to the number of members and active and able members.
Too many will affect membership, too few may cause volunteers to look elsewhere, so continual monitoring of
the active participatory membership is needed.
2 We need to place greater emphasis on membership recruitment and orientation (we need to know why we are
Lions). We need to be more consistent in arranging for speakers at our meetings with a mixture of Lions services
and community interest speakers.  We need to explore how we best may become involved in community
children activities and service.  We need younger members, those are the parents of the children.  I think we
would benefit from an occasional social night out  where every memeber is urged to bring a guest
  prospective member.
3 I think more has to be explained or discussed at the meetings
4 1. Cohesion and enthusaism among members that will make everyone want to work towards achieving our goals.
  2. Education regarding the specifics about the Lions Club (i.e. rules & regs.).
  3. Since we live in a vacation/retirement or second home community, and many of our members are not regularly
available maybe  joining with neighboring clubs for charity events will ignite interest and more participation.
5 I think we need more advertising in our community. Until I joined the lions, I did not know the events at the
community center were sponsored by the lions.
7 1) We need to get more current members involved in our activities and events by constantly educating them on
what we are and what is expected of them to do as part of the Lions, 2) actively recruit new members that share our
desire to serve others and 3) openly publicize what we do and why. Also, the Club appears to be in transition from the
old way of doing things to the new ways of doing things. We need to be aware of this transition and and manage it  in a
  constructive and caring way.
9 New membership, younger membership , expand the club into Wilbur, Daytona Beach Shores and NSB. The club
needs to grow outside the politics and community of Ponce [no offense intended]
10  We need to do things on a regular basis: 1) Like have White Cane days once a month; 2) or have service days at
the blind center where we provide volunteers on a regular basis - weekly/bi-weekly-monthly.
11 Observation is that we are a testament to the pareto principle. However; as we discussed, it's a leadership issue in
that the Board needs to develop participative programs that challenges and satisfies the membership. People
need to feel a part of the direction of the enterprise.
13 If you have meeting at different places, people don t always know where to go
15 I think the board meeting should be held separate from Lions meeting. One hour is not enough time to conduct
  meeting.
16 Find ways to get our new members to participate in events and projects – incorporation. And want to be on the
  Board of Directors!
17 On question #13, maybe every other meeting - meet at a restaurant.
18 Be more assertive about informing the community of our activities.   Recruit more members!
19

I think we have a great club and terrific people. Sorry I took so long to fill this out.
