Local Projects
Message in a Bottle
The Lions Message in a Bottle is a simple idea that encourages people to keep their basic personal and medical details in a common place where they can easily be found in an emergency. The information is kept in a bottle which is kept in the fridge where emergency services would look to find it in the event of being called to your home. They will know you have a bottle by two labels, one which is fixed on the inside of your front door or main entrance to your home and the other on the door of your fridge.
The bottles are free with all costs being paid for by local Lions via generous donations from the public and can be found in most doctor's surgeries in the Scarborough area.
Spectacle collection, repair and re-allocation
YOUR UNWANTED SPECTACLES COULD IMPROVE THE LIFE OF A PERSON IN THE DEVELOPING WORLD.
LIONS CLUBS INTERNATIONAL HAVE BEEN COLLECTING AND SORTING SPECTACLES FOR THE LAST 27 YEARS. THEY ARE TRANSPORTED TO MEDICO FRANCE IN LE HAVRE. AFTER BEING CLEANED AND GRADED THEY ARE READY FOR USE IN EYE CAMPS IN AFRICA, INDIA and EASTERN EUROPE.
International Projects
Working with our fellow Lions across the world we also sponsor Sight First, a service to the visually impaired which has raised over £150 million with over 800 grants totalling some £98 million being approved for blindness prevention in over 90 countries.
Every Year we hold our Our World Sight Day when we highlight the plight of the visually impaired in the third world. Watch this space for our next day.
Plant a million trees worldwide
This year Lions Clubs worldwide have committed to plant 1 million trees. Here in Scarborough we started our tree planting at Scarborough Hospital where we planted some trees in one of the many garden areas there. Since then we have planted almost 300 more trees in Foxholes and other areas in Scarborough.
