    SENIOR CITIZENS PROJECT

 The St. Croix Lions Club has been a monthly visitor to the Herbert Grigg Home for the Aged since its inception in 1966. This was the Club's first project.  Members visit the Home on the last Saturday of each month, serve desserts and  beverages and share fellowship with the residents. The membership also visits the Home on Mother's Day, Father's Day, and during the Christmas season. On Mother's and Father's Day,  gifts are presented and desserts/ beverages served. During the Christmas season, carols are sung  and gifts presented along with snacks.

 

ENVIRONMENTAL

   The Club has a very intensive Environmental Program which includes monthly maintenance of three adopted areas. The Lagoon Picnic area which was refurbished after Hurricane Hugo in 1999. The grounds include Picnic tables and benches at the beach front, five beach front cabanas, furnished with concrete tables and benches, surrounded by flowering plants and ornamental trees. The club takes care of  maintenance of the grounds, and painting/ repair of all of the fixtures. Monthly cutting of the grass, pruning of the trees, and hedges are also carried out. The Peter's Rest Triangle, another adopted site, is cleaned monthly by the membership. Grass is cut, area raked and trash removed. This site is on the roadway, and bears the Club's sign. The third area is the Club's Den Site.  A property under a twenty- five year lease from the VI Government. The property is being developed; and plans for the Club's future Den site and Community Center is in progress.. The grounds are maintained monthly.

SCHOOL VISION SCREENING PROJECT

The St. Croix Lions Club School Vision Screening Project was started in 1996  and is a collaborative effort  between Pearle Vision Center and the Club. All of the schools on St. Croix has been screened over the years. Usually, the Club will look at the dates they were screened and provide services as needed. The free sevice are offered to the students and faculty members. This year, St. Croix Central High School will be screened. During the activity the Club provides the manpower to assist with registration, check the children's eyes with the Snelling Chart, assist the Audio Visual Technician, and provide the orderly movement of the children to the various stations.

DIABETES PROGRAM

This year the St. Croix Lions Club will be celebrating 14 years of providing free Diabetes Service to the St. Croix community. The Club partners with the Dept. of Health Diabetes Prevention and Control Program, The Frederiksted Twin- City Lions Club, People United For A Better Virgin Islands, and The Virgin Islands Medical Institute. The big event is held in November.  This year's date is Saturday, November 12, from          8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Services offered are Blood Pressure Screening, Blood Sugar Screening, Foot Exams, Eye Exams,Cholesterol Screening, Flu Shots, A Diabetes Nutrition Presentation, Diabetes Information Material, and an Exit Interview. All referrals are coordinated through the Dept. of Health Diabetes Program.

YOUTH PROGRAM

Over the past  14 years the St. Croix Lions Club has hosted a Christmas Party for the Children at The Youth  Behavioral Center. Each December members from the Club donate gifts for each youth who reside at the center along with the purchase of a live Christmas tree/ornaments.  The youths decorate the Christmas tree which is lighted at the beginning of the Christmas party by the youngest youth at the center.  A Christmas program involving a lively chorale of Christmas carols is then sung by both Lions/youths, selected youth presentation, gift-giving, and a culmination of various local foods/beverages is enjoyed by all as the Lions share good tidings and joy to the youths at the center.

STRIDES FOR DIABETES AWARENES PROJECT

The St. Croix Lions Club Strides For Diabetes Awareness Project was launched in January 2011, and is intended to serve as a reminder to St. Croix residents with Diabetes and those at risk about the importance of maintaining healthy lifestyle changes , if they are to lead meaningful and productive lives. The event features a one hour walk in traffic under police eccort, with water stations along the route, and the rhytmic sounds of alocal DJ to make the walk more enjoyable. At the end of the walk there is a Diabetes presentation by our own honorary Lion Dr Cora Christian MD, MPH, followed by a Nutritional Presentation, and a Mini Diabetes Health Fair. The Club also provides Fruits, water and juices for the participants

WORK WITH THE BLIND

The St. Croix Lions Club work with the Blind was started six years ago in October 2007.  The activity grew out Lions association and founding of The White Cane Safety Day.,which is celebrated each year on October 15th. This resulted in the formation of a very close relationship witj The St. Croix Center for Independent Living, the local organization that champions the causes for the blind and people living with disabilities. The club hosts a White Cane celebration each October, and rovides White Canes for blind participants that are without. During the cativity thetre is a Walk in Traffic under Police escort, during which participants talk about what they would like to have the Government do  to  make their lives easier, and in general show solidarity among themselves for the lack of services that are not provided. The St. Croix Lions Club is committeed to assisting them in putting their concerns out there, and to assist in general wherte needs be. The Program  features remarks by the Club's President Center Director, and testimonials from participants who are striving to live independently. The Program concludes with White Cane presentations, and Food and drinks for all participants.
