SENATOR STEVEN HORSFORD APPLAUDS THE SUMMERLIN LIONS and LEAP ALLIANCE PARTNERSHIP
While visiting the recent Doolittle Community Center Health Fair in Las Vegas, Nevada Senate Majority Leader Steven Horsford expressed his enthusiastic support for a Las Vegas Summerlin Lions Club and Lower Extremity Amputation Prevention (LEAP) Alliance partnership aimed at preventing foot and leg amputations in diabetics.
Both Lions Clubs International and the American Academy of Podiatric Practice Management (AAPPM), an affiliate organization of the American Podiatric Medical Association, have also applauded the LEAP Alliance and Las Vegas Summerlin Lions Club's partnership. They have expressed interest in developing a collaboration that would expand the foot screening program through a network of Lions Clubs and participating AAPPM member podiatrists throughout the country.
LEAP Alliance podiatrists and other Summerlin Lions Club health professionals train and supervise members who volunteer to perform free diabetic foot screenings at community health fairs and other wellness events. Members do not need a medical background to learn the noninvasive foot screening procedure. It is a simple test for loss of skin sensation which may be caused by undiagnosed diabetic peripheral neuropathy (DPN). DPN is the leading cause of serious foot and leg complications and amputations in diabetics.
Screened persons found to have possible DPN or other potentially hazardous foot problems are advised to have a follow up foot examination by their podiatrist or other qualified physician. Early detection and prompt treatment of DPN and any coexisting foot problems can prevent diabetic skin sores (ulcers) and infections that can lead to amputations.
The LEAP Alliance and Summerlin Lions’ are now expanding their diabetic foot screening program by training members of other Nevada Lions Clubs to participate in an amputation-prevention program named: “Nevada Lions Hunt for Diabetic Peripheral Neuropathy.”
The Lions Sight First provides eye care for those that are in need and cannot afford to pay for their care. This is accomplished by volunteers helping. We are in need of a volunteer to help pick up phone calls approve applications and schedule appointments. Training will be provided. The immediate need is for one day a week picking up phone calls, returning calls, mailing applications out and assisting with scheduling Optometrist exams. You will have to use the computer gmail for record keeping.
We also meet once a month, the 4th Tuesday of the month at the Blind Center 6PM.
Please join Evelyn Van Gordon, Charlotte Jenkins, Vince Reardon and Al Van Gordon in helping those that need us.
We also need Optometrist and Opthamologist for our clients. If you know of a doctor that can help us with pro bono patients please let me know.
Please contact me if you are interested in this type of community service. Call 233 0778, email 1413ae@cox.net or tell me in person.

Foot Screenings for Diabetic Peripheral Neuropathy
Las Vegas Summerlin Lions Club members provide free amputation-prevention foot screening for diabetic persons at community health fairs and other health improvement events. The Club partners with the nonprofit Lower Extremity Amputation Prevention (LEAP) Alliance to train volunteer members to become "Foot Soldiers in the War Against Diabetes." Members learn to perform a simple test using a nylon filament that can detect foot numbness due to nerve damage caused by Diabetic Peripheral Neuropathy (DPN). DPN is the leading cause of diabetic foot complications and leg amputations. Screened persons who may have DPN are advised to have follow-up care from a podiatrist or other physician.
