On Friday 19th August, 256 riders took part in the Club’s 2011 “Bike around Brands” sponsored cycle ride around the Indy circuit at Brands Hatch.
This year was somewhat different, with 79 year old Rita Turner from Farningham taking part, riding her mobility scooter, named “The Rascal”. Rita completed 6 laps of the 1.2 mile Indy circuit before the somewhat chilly evening weather caused her to give up. After the ride Rita said she was “on a high the next day” and that taking part had “given her a wonderful feeling of belonging”.
If all pledges are honoured, the sponsor money raised by Rita and the other riders, together with anticipated Gift Aid, will be a little over £4700 after expenses. The ‘lions share’ will be donated to EllenorLions Hospices and the balance retained by the Club to help others in need.
Of those who took part, 76 were under 14 years of age and 108 had ridden in previous years. Lions Club President, Peter Lampkin, and the members, are indebted to the regular supporters, those new to the event and to Jonathan Palmer, of MotorSport Vision, and his team at Brands Hatch, for their assistance in running this important annual fund raiser.
