A record number of riders took part in Swanley & North Downs Lions Club’s 10th annual ‘Bike Around Brands’ event around the famous Indy circuit on Friday 7 August 2015.
Just short of 300 took part, 100 more than 2014, including octogenarian Rita Turner, taking part for the third time riding her mobility scooter and the welcome return of the  Kneller family including 80 year old Bob and great grandson Teddy.   Another participant was Lion Andrew Stevens,  of Alnwick Lions who with friend Mark, travelled to Kent on the day, completed 11 laps of the circuit  and then drove home,  a 750 mile round trip! Whilst riding, Andrew found £60 on the track, which was returned to the rider who had lost it, resulting in a further £20 donation to Swanley’s income.
A group of cycling colleagues from Access Insurance raised over £2,000, and among the other riders, were 96 who had taken part in previous and 53 riders under 14 years of age. Many local club cyclists rode for training or for fun, several covering more than 30 laps of the 1.25 mile circuit.
The event was held in aid of the local hospice service, ‘ellenor’ (formerly known as EllenorLions Hospices), and other worthy causes. It raised approximately £7,250 after track-hire etc. which is up on 2014.
Lion President John Flatman and the club members thank Jonathan Palmer and the staff at Brands Hatch for their help and co-operation, and to everyone who took part.
