CLUB PROJECTS AND ACTIVITIES

Warragul Lions Club participates in a number of community service and fundraising projects. These include:

BBQ Catering

In the last twelve months the Warragul Lions Club has participated in over 30 catering events ranging from breakfast bbq’s, Bunnings sausage sizzles through to take-away food catering at Farm World and Baw Baw Garden Expo. The Club has even provided bbq catering at after-wedding functions.

Some of these catering events have been undertaken as a community service where the proceeds are returned to the community organisation involved. The Club is well resourced with trailer-mounted bbq’s, drink fridges, deep fryers, bain marie’s, a refrigerator trailer and all equipment needed for catering.

For information or enquiries about Warragul Lions Club bbq catering, contact Catering Coordinator John White (ph: 0405 343 734).

Firewood Sales

Over the summer months Warragul Lions members are busy cutting and splitting logs, and stockpiling the wood ready for firewood sales over winter.  This is made possible by the generous assistance from cartage contractors and from property owners.

The Club also delivers the firewood.

For enquiries about Warragul Lions Club firewood sales, contact Firewood Coordinator Peter Hammond (ph: 0418 235 346).

To find the nearest outlet, or to buy Lions cakes at other times during the year, contact Cake Coordinator Kieran Heenan (ph: 0417 158 481).

Annual Book Fair

The Warragul Lions Club conducts a book fair each year in February selling used and pre-loved books.  The Book Fair is held in Warragul’s Exhibition Hall over a two-day weekend with over 20,000 fiction, non-fiction and children’s books on offer.

During the year books are collected, sorted and categorised ready for the next book fair.

All proceeds go towards the Warragul Lions Club fundraising allocations.

The sale of Lion Mints is a major fundraiser which has given a great financial boost to community work supported by Lions Australia.  The Warragul Lions Club has a network of shops and businesses around the Warragul CBD where Lion Mints can be purchased.  Lions members regularly top up supplies.

Lions Junior Public Speaking

The Warragul Lions Club has participated in the Lions Junior Public Speaking Program since 2017.  The aim of the program is to give students in primary schools the chance to develop their ability to speak in public and improve their self-confidence.  The program is run for primary students in years 3, 4, 5 and 6.

The program is open for all primary schools in the Warragul area.  The competition is held during term 3 with school finalists progressing through to a Lions District Final in October.

Lions Annual Golf Day

In partnership with the Warragul Country Club, the Warragul Lions Club conducts an annual golf day at the Country Club.  The golf day is open to the public and Lions members alike.  Lions members compete for the Gus Kittelty Memorial Cup.

Proceeds from the Lions golf day are donated to Legacy.

The Lions Annual Golf Day is usually held in Autumn each year.

Lions Eye Health – Children’s Vision Screening Program

Vision impairment is a huge, vastly underrated and overlooked problem in Australia.  The aim of the Lions Eye Health Program is to reduce the incidence and impact of vision loss in the community through a Lions auspiced, community-based awareness, education and screening program.

Warragul Lions Club together with Neerim and District Lions Club conducts a vision screening program by invitation at local primary schools.  A series of screening tests are undertaken including the use of a spot vision camera.

Vision screening has found that one in five children has an undetected vision problem.

For more information about the Lions Eye Health Program contact the Warragul Lions Club Secretary (ph: 0407 343 641).
