Wharton Lions Club Information:
Wharton Lions Club received its charter from Lions International in 1928, just 11 years after the Lions Club organization was started by Melvin Jones and other business leaders in Chicago in 1917. The low charter number of 001657 attests to this early membership. Lions clubs have been established through out the world and membership numbers well over one and a quarter million. H.E. Wilson (1928-1929) was the first president of Wharton Lions Club.
Lions clubs are primarily charitable organizations with emphasis on programs to aid the blind and those with severe vision problems and to promote visual health. Helen Keller encouraged and advised Lions in this early charitable endeavor. Many other charitable activities have evolved over the years as part of Lion charities. Wharton Lions Club mainly supports worthy activities in Wharton, but also contributes to Texas and national Lions charities.
Lions clubs are are primarily charitable and service organizations, but secondarily they provide civic, educational and social benefits to its members.
Wharton Lions Club holds its Pancake Supper, which is its major fund raising event, the first Thursday in March of each year. The Club meets at noon every Thursday. It is a privilege to be a Lion and new members must be sponsored by an existing member. We continuously seek new, qualified members.
