Liberty Essay Contest

The Boiling Springs Lions Club recently sponsored a Liberty Essay Contest at Crest High School. The theme of the essay was on liberty which is a part of the continuing emphasis in Lionism to make all citizens aware of the significance and content of the Declaration of Independence and the United States Constitution. The Lions Club promotes this contest by encouraging high school juniors in North Carolina to write an essay on what liberty means to them personally. This years essay was based on a statement by Thomas Jefferson that, “the people are the only sure reliance for the preservation of liberty “.

The winner of this years essay is Maria Uribe. Congratulations to Maria for her winning entry. She was awarded a $100 U.S. Savings Bond by Club President Ruth Pace at the November 15th Lions Club Meeting at Gardner Webb University. She was accompanied by her friend Stephanie Moreno, her teacher David Putnam and his wife Jill. All club members were also present.

Maria’s essay has also been awarded 1st place in the Lions District 31-A. She will travel to Ashville, NC for the award presentation on November 20th.

Boiling Springs Lions Lansford Jolley and Edwin White served as coordinators for the contest. Thanks to Crest High School Principal Roger Harris and teacher David Putnam for coordinating this contest and making it a huge success.
