Microfinance

Microfinance is one of the latest venues that Lions clubs are using to support those in need by helping them to succeed and provide for themselves and their families. Using Kiva, a site that lends money to those with a need,  the club most recently voted to fund an education microfinance project. We were able to loan $200 to Silver in Bolivia. Silver has a degree in philosophy and was preparing to be a priest, but he felt it was not enough. His true calling was to help people in a more tangible adn concrete way, so he began his work in a learning support center for needy children. Silver's loan will enable him to finish his studies for an environmental engineering degree so that he may continue his charity work in addition to providing for his family.

Last year, the committee chose to support Dilorom, a 27 year old woman from Tajikistan who wants to purchase a computerized sewing machine to start a dress making business, with a $450 loan. She has began to repay us, which is the money we have reloaned to help Silver.  Using our referral credits, we were also able to support two others for free.

Check out the Chicago Windy City Lions Kiva Lender page to see who we have been able to help! Also, if anyone would like to start their own Kiva account, you can sign up with oureferral link and get a $25 referral crecit for both of us.
