EVLC Starts New Year with a Bang

Edison Visionary Lions Club started new Lionistic year with a celebration of American Independence day. Under the leadership of Lion Anu Chitnis, the club promised a year as spectacular as the fireworks in Edison this week.

Past Cabinet Secretary Lion Anu Chitnis took oath of office in a cozy ceremony as the president of this vibrant club. Lion Narayanan Srinivasan was elected to serve as the new club secretary. Lion Kartika Gupta and Lion Rina Bajpai were elected as treasurer and membership director. Lion Suresh Kanthaswamy and Lion Sam Khan will serve as vice presidents. 2nd Vice Governor Lion Mahesh Chitnis was the installing officer.

Lion Anu said in her acceptance speech, “I am looking forward to lead this group of talented individuals to serve our community. Being the home club of our second vice governor, Lion Mahesh Chitnis, it is our duty to lead by example. We will be creative, coordinated and consistent.”

Since the club’s chartering in 2010, Edison Visionary Lions Club has successfully completed several local and international projects. “LION”, official magazine of Lions Clubs International, recognized their effort by selecting them as “Club of the month” in July/August 2011. The club has undertaken projects like seasonal social for people with special needs, audio/visual screening, toy drive, serving the veterans, free cataract surgeries, early childcare center for underprivileged kids. More details can be found at their website (www.visionarylions.org).

On 4th July, the club joined hands with South Asian Community Outreach to celebrate American Independence day at Pappiani Park in Edison. Besides being one of the three biggest contributors, Lion members did vision screening for more than 100 individuals with no vision insurance. They also entertained the young visitors with fun activities like Patriotic Tattoos, Face painting, Henna tattoos and variety of games. This event symbolized unity in diversity. Lion Sam Khan is the founder of South Asian Community Outreach.

Members of the Lions club worked tirelessly for the success of this event. They helped SACO selflessly in creating audio/visual presentations, distributing flyers, putting up lawn signs, signing up vendors, soliciting sponsorships, and volunteering for several tasks. Members of their cub program and members of North Brunswick Visionary Leos Club supported them. The event was attended by more that 12,000 members of the community. Among the notable dignitaries were Mayor Antonia Ricigliano, State Senator Joseph Kyrillos, State Senator Sam Thompson and members of Edison council.
