History:

The first Lions Club was founded in 1917 in Chicago.
The Madrid Iowa Lions Club was founded in 1929.

 In 1925, Helen Keller addressed the Lions international convention in Cedar Point, Ohio, USA. She challenged Lions to become "Knights of the Blind in the crusade against Darkness". From that time, Lions clubs have been actively involved in service to the blind and visually impaired.

This year the Madrid Lions collected almost 300 pairs of used eyeglasses  for the "Recycle for Sight" project.
We have raised in the past, over 
$8000.00
 in the past for organizations like Madrid Tiger Tots Preschool, Boone County Extension 4-H Clubs, Boone County Prevention & Services, Camp Hertko Hollow Scholarship, Pony Express – Camp Sunnyside, Madrid Community School Organizations, Boy Scout Troop 150, Cub Scout Pack 150, Madrid Historical Museum, 4 Madrid Lions College Scholarships, Iowa Lions Foundation, Iowa Lions “Coming to Your Senses), Leader Dogs for the Blind, Lions Club International Foundation, Lions Summer Camp, ASSIST After Prom party,  Eagle Scout Project, Eye Exams & Glasses for qualifing student.

"Lions Recycle for Sight" drop boxes can be found at the Madrid Public Library, Madrid City Hall , City State Bank , Madrid Historical Building , UnityPoint Family Physicians Huxley, Ia and the Madrid Home. You can also give your used eye glasses to any Lions member.This year we collected over 300 eyeglasses and 4 sets of hearing aids!
