The Merriman Lions Club has been serving the community since 1965 and its clubhouse, home to more than 23 Lions and their partners in service, is situated in leased premises on the corner of Merriman and Dirkie Uys Streets, Goodwood. The Lions Community Centre has been extensively renovated by the club through member contributions and sponsorships. Originally chartered as Parow on 10 June 1965 we registered our new location with Lions Clubs International so as to prevent any confusion with its name.

The first Southern African club was chartered in Cape Town in 1957 and since then our district has expanded to cover the whole of the Western Cape right up to Plettenberg Bay and still includes the Northern Cape and Namibia. With fifty eight Lions Clubs and over 1000 male & female members we are in the forefront of local humanitarian community service.

Our District is one of two Districts, E and W, making up Multiple District 410. Our club has a proud service record based on our organisation’s international  motto “We Serve” to which we have added “Service Has No Boundaries” as we are at work locally, nationally and internationally. If we have the means and the members we will assist or find a solution to meeting community needs.

Lions Clubs International is the world's largest service club organization with more than 1.4 million members in approximately 49,000 clubs in more than 200 countries and geographical areas around the world. Our membership is fully diverse and there’s a place for individuals, partners , families and those whose careers and business lives make it difficult to participate in club activities yet they know they can help by giving access to their network.

Covid 19 and the ensuing pandemic and lockdowns have forced clubs to act and think differently regarding community service. We have to be aware of the risks of public interaction for those members who have  co-morbidities but fortunately we are able to tailor our activities whilst still supporting Lions International’s eight pillars of service. Public group fundraisers are not permissible but we are fortunate to have other funding sources for our club’s operations.

When and Where do we meet?

One 90 minute General Business Meeting on the second Monday of the month with lots of good humour and fun amongst our male & female members the youngest of whom is 20! If you would like to attend a meeting at the Lions Community Centre (Cultural Centre), Cnr Merriman and Dirkie Uys Streets, Goodwood please email your request/details to merrimanlionsclub65@gmail.com

“Kindness Matters”.
