(Lions Eye Bank at Albany) In 1952, thanks to some very intuitive Lions members and Knights of the Blind, the Sight Society of Northeastern New York (Lions Eye Bank at Albany) was formed. Since its inception, this non-profit organization has provided more than 10,000 corneas that have been used for research and transplantation throughout the world. The Lions Eye Bank at Albany covers 28 counties in New York State and Great Barrington, MA. Since our beginning in 1952, the Sight Society of Northeastern New York (Lions Eye Bank at Albany) has served many vital roles: Serving 48 hospitals in 28 counties of Northeastern New York and Great Barrington, MA our trained personnel are available 24 hours a day for cornea / eye procurement as well as to provide education for healthcare professionals and the public. Over 10,000 corneas have been placed worldwide thanks to our donors and their families. Children and families can find support both medical and educational. Approximately 85% of the corneas that are donated are used for transplantation; the remainder are usually used for research purposes. The Eye Bank Association of America was established in the 1960's. Through this organization, uniform medical / surgical standards, were established. With nearly 100 eye bank members worldwide, eye tissue is available for over 46,000 recipients each year.
