  SERVICE PROJECTS

  NORTHWOOD IN TOUCH

Our club is a satellite for Northwood In Touch, a personal response system to be used in emergencies. This unit has personal reminders that can be programmed into the unit, such as reminding the client to take medication, when a home care worker is coming, etc. As well as being a valuable service activity, this is a fund-raiser for our club as we get fees for installation and monthly maintenance per unit.

For additional information about these units, contact:

Lion Frank Meister fbmeister@ns.sympatico.ca in the New Ross area,

Lion Jim Barkhouse jimb@ns.sympatico.ca in the Chester and Chester Basin areas.

VON SAFETY CHECK IN PROGRAM

Our club is participating in another VON program. Every Monday, between 9 am and noon, a club member calls a list of clients who have signed up for this program. Other groups and organizations call the other six days of the week. The goal of the program is to check in with seniors living alone to see if they are alright. For information about this program call Lesley Taylor at 624-0318 or Kathy Uhlman at 624-1897.

FROZEN FAVORITE MEALS

Frozen Favorites are available in the New Ross, Chester and Chester Basin areas. In New Ross call Lion Frank Meister 689-2150, or Lion Sharon Rafuse 689-2402. In the Chester and Chester Basin areas, call Kathy at 624-0318. All proceeds to the Lunenburg County Branch of the VON.

USED HEARING AIDS/INK CARTRIDGES/CELL PHONES

Do you have a used hearing aid you no longer need? If so, please contact a member of our club as LIONS recycle hearing aids.  We also collect ink cartridges and cell phones that go to the Diabetes Association as a fund-raiser.

POSTAGE STAMP PROJECT

This is a district project with proceeds going towards district activities. Used postage stamps can be given to any member of a Lions Club.

VIAL OF LIFE PROGRAM

This is a project which involves providing vials in which medication information is stored. These vials are stored in the upper right part of the fridge and a decal on the door to the house tells emergency staff that there is a vial in the fridge containing pertinent medical information , a list of medications, family doctor, etc. All funding for this program was raised by way of corporate sponsorship. Vials are now available for distribution. For more information about this program contact Lion Sandra Zwicker (275-3629) e-mail sandrazwicker@ns.sympatico.ca

WHEELS TO MEALS

Club members help serve seniors during the monthly wheels to meals dinner held at the Chester Basin Legion. This is also a VON sponsored program and is a joint project between the Chester Basin Legion and our Lions Club. The meals are held the 1st Tuesday of each month. To register call the VON office at 624-0318 or 624-1897 at least two weeks before each meal. Meals are $7.00, with entertainment and a program.

Another of our community service volunteer activities.

DIABETES AWARENESS

Proceeds from the annual grocery draw  are used for Diabetes awareness and education activities.  Each year the club donates $1,000 to sponsor a child to Camp Lion Maxwell, a camp for diabetic children located at Lake William in Lunenburg County.

VOLUNTEER COMMUNITY SERVICES

Our club provides volunteer labour for the following community activities: Assisted in the highway cleanup in Chester Basin for the 250th anniversary; Youth Soccer Association canteen at  soccer tournaments;  New Ross Area Christmas Festival turkey dinner;  assisted with the  installation of playground equipment for Gold River school. Any money raised goes to the group organizing the activity.

 YOUTH SERVICE ACTIVITIES:

We place a strong emphasis on youth activities and take part in the drug awareness poster contest. Two $500.00 bursaries are awarded each year to graduating students at Forest Heights. Our club also participates in the speak-out contest, a public speaking program for grade IX to XII students. We provide Canada flags to Grade one students for Canada Day.
