SPEAKOUT CONTEST
 

 

 

 

 

 

 

The Cole Harbour Lions are hosting a public speaking contest for students attending grade 9, 10, 11 and 12 in Cole Harbour.  Students prepare a five minute speech and compete for cash prizes and trophies.  

There are four levels to the contest and, this year, the 1st place winner will advance to the finals which will be held in Antigonish, Nova Scotia.

General Information

The Cole Harbour Lions Speakout Contest provides students with an opportunity to think about important current issues; to organize their thoughts and ideas; and to effectively present these ideas publicly. The Speakout Contest provides a forum for young people to build self confidence as they publicly put forward and defend their views.
 
Club Speakout Contest - February 20, 2012 - Cole Harbour Fire Hall
 
The Cole Harbour Lions Club is organizing its 4th Annual Speakout Contest in Cole Harbour to be held February 20, 2012  at 7:00 p.m. at the Cole Harbour Fire Hall.  Each contestant will receive a Certificate of Appreciation, and prizes will be awarded as follows:
  • 1st Prize $25.00 Cash Trophy
  • 2nd Prize $15.00 Cash Medallion or Trophy
  • 3rd Prize $10.00 Cash Medallion or Trophy
Zone Speakout Contest - March 29, 2012 - Lake Echo Lions Club

The 1st Place Winner of the Club Speakout Contest will advance to the Zone Level where they will compete with other students from Lions Clubs in our Zone (Eastern Passage/Cow Bay, Dartmouth, Lake Echo, Preston and Area).  The Zone Speakout Contest will be held at the Lake Echo Lions Club on March 29, 2012 at the Lake Echo Lions Club, 3168 Hwy. 7, Lake Echo. Each contestant will receive a Certificate of Appreciation, and prizes will be awarded as follows:

  • 1st Prize $50.00 Cash Trophy
  • Runner-up $30.00 Cash Trophy
  • Remaining Contestants $20.00 Cash Trophy
 
District Speakout Contest - April 28, 2012
The 1st Place Winner of the Zone Speakout Contest will advance to the District Level where they will compete with other students from Lions Clubs throughout Nova Scotia.  The District Speakout Contest will be held in Amherst, Nova Scotia, on April 28, 2012.   The Lions Clubs in our Zone will pay the student's expenses as follows: Accommodation for One (1) night for the contestant and One (1) companion (parent, legal guardian or relative), not more than $25.00 per day each for meals, and return mileage as per Lions International rules of audit). Each contestant will receive a Certificate of Appreciation, and prizes will be awarded as follows:
  • 1st Prize $175.00 Cash Trophy
  • Runner-up $125.00 Cash Trophy
  • Remaining Contestants $100.00 Cash Trophy
 
Multiple District Level - May 19, 2012 - ANTIGONISH, NOVA SCOTIA
The 1st Prize Winner of the District Speakout Contest will advance to the Multiple District Level where they will compete with students from other Provinces.  The Multiple District Speakout Contest will be held in Antigonish, Nova Scotia, on May 19, 2012.  The Lions Clubs in Nova Scotia will pay the student's expenses as follows: Not more than two nights accommodation for the contestant and one companion (parent, legal guardian or relative), not more than $25.00 per day each for meals, and return travel fares (as per Lions International Rules of Audit) by the least expensive method between contestant's home. An International Banquet Ticket for theDistrict N2 Speak-out contestant and one guest ( parent, legal guardian or relative ) will be provided, should they desire to attend. 
 

 

Contest Rules

1. The contest will be co-educational at all four levels (Club, Zone, District and Multiple District).
 
2. All grade 9, 10, 11, and 12 students in full-time attendance may participate.
 
3. Speakers will be assigned numbers which are to be drawn prior to the Speakout. Contestants will be introduced by number and topic. Speakers will be identified after all have spoken.
 
4. All speeches are to be approximately five (5) minutes in length. Speeches shorter than four (4) minutes or longer than six (6) minutes will be penalized one (1) point for each ten (10) seconds or portion thereof; e.g. 2 seconds - 1 point, 8 seconds - 1 point, 13 seconds - 2 points, 33 seconds - 4 points, etc.
 
5. Contestants at the Club Level may use prepared scripts, but excessive reading will be penalized. Contestants at the Zone and District levels may use notes only.
 
6. Contestants may use a different topic at each level of the Speakout, however, the speech must be an original.
 
7. At the end of each speech, contestants will be asked One (1) question by the Questioners. The judges will award points for knowledge of subject and manner of response. Questioners will not score speakers. Questions should be brief and to the point.
 
8.  Questioners will ask questions pertaining to the contestant's topic, and questions should be simple and concise.
 
9. All speakers will be evaluated in three (3) categories (see judges score sheets). A. Delivery of  Speech, B. Material of Speech, C. Response to Questions

Student Resume and Consent for Photographs

Students must complete the Student Resume in order to enter the contest.  Also, in order for photographs to be published in the newspaper or on the Lions Clubs website, parents/guardians are required to sign the Consent at the bottom of this form.  Please bring the form to the public speaking contest on February 20, 2012.  Click here to download a copy of the Student Resume and Consent for Photograph form.
