Big prizes await for Fishin’ Fiesta

Posted: Sunday, May 16, 2010 2:00 am

The Freeport Host Lions Club is gearing up for the 63rd annual Freeport Fishin’ Fiesta from June 30 to July 4 in Freeport Municipal Park.

Bonita, a new category, will be added for boat captains and guides but will not be eligible for the grand prize money. The second category added this year in the adult division is swordfish, and it will be eligible for grand prize money.

The 63rd annual Fishin’ Fiesta will award cash prizes for first place ($500), second place ($300) and third place ($200) in all 14 offshore and 9 inshore adult categories. The juvenile division winners also will be eligible to win prizes for the eight offshore and eight inshore categories: first place (a $500 savings bond); second place (a $200 savings bond); and third place (a $100 savings bond).

The grand prize in both the adult offshore and inshore divisions will be $6,300 and will be presented at the awards ceremony July 4. Winners for the two grand prizes in the adult division will be determined in each of these divisions by placing the names of the first-place winners of the 14 offshore and nine inshore divisions in a hat. The grand prizes in the juvenile division are two lifetime fishing licenses — one for each of the offshore and inshore divisions.

The names of the first-place winners in both the eight inshore and eight offshore categories will be placed in a hat and the grand prize winner in each division will be selected by a drawing at the awards ceremony. In 2009, the 62nd annual Fishin’ Fiesta grew to be one of the largest fishing tournaments in the state with more than 900 registered anglers and 28,000 people entering the Freeport Municipal Park during the five-day event.

Applications to sponsor, advertise or participate in the Fishin’ Fiesta can be picked up from any member of the Freeport Host Lions Club or at Grapevine Gifts, Ann’s Custom Monogramming, or Area Print Shop. Fifteen thousand programs will be produced, but time is running out to sponsor a category or advertise in the 63rd annual Fishin’ Fiesta program.
