Liberty Day at Eastern High School

A Liberty Day program was presented by the Greentown Lions Club on September 15, 2017 at Eastern High School.  September 17th marked the 230th year since the signing of the US Constitution.  Two assemblies were held in the Performing Arts Center.  About 200 booklets containing the text of the Declaration of Independence and US Constitution were distributed to 8th and 12th graders.  The students learned how grievances in the Declaration are resolved in the Constitution.   We also reviewed the 3 branches of government and the 5 rights granted by the First Amendment.  Our guest speaker was State Representative Mike Karickhoff.  He provided some interesting facts about the Indiana State Constitution, talked about his political history, and answered student questions.  Lions Wayne Sozansky, Dave Mohring, Mike Imbler, Henry Rodriquez, Bill Holt, Russ Patton, Matt Jensen, and Tom Moor assisted in the project.  Eastern eighth grade teacher Cole Allison was instrumental in coordinating the assemblies.

Liberty Day 2017Students Reading Constitution at Liberty Day 2017

On Friday, October 28th,2016, the Greentown Lions Club conducted its first “Liberty Day” program at Eastern High School. Over 250 students from grades 8 and 11 participated in the program. Each student received a booklet containing the Declaration of Independence and US Constitution. Lions members presented a short history of the Constitution and Lion Wayne Sozansky asked the students questions. US Representative Susan Brooks was our honored guest. She enthusiastically engaged the students and described her congressional job. She noted that one requirement to file a bill includes noting the Article and Section of the Constitution that provides jurisdiction. Representative Brooks also answered student questions. The program was well received by both students and administration and we look forward to doing it again next year. Liberty day booklets are provided through a Lions state project.

Annual Howard County 4H Fair
The county fair is the primary club project.  The club owns and manages the fairgrounds and all members come together to help setup, work, clean-up, and volunteer to do whatever is needed to make this a success.

Christmas Collection and Food Baskets
Each year the Greentown Lions spend a Friday afternoon and a Saturday standing at various locations around Greentown. The Lions ring bells to collect donations which are used to purchase fresh food items to be placed in Christmas Food Baskets to help the less fortunate families in our community. The baskets are delivered by Lions the Saturday before Christmas.

The Boy Scouts also play a vital role with the food baskets and our community. The Boy Scouts collect non-perishable food items from local residents. These non-perishable foods are included in the food baskets.
