LBLC Lions Celebrate Scholarship Award Winners at August Meeting

The Lord Baltimore Lions Club announced the awarding of three academic college scholarships to 2018 graduating seniors at Indian River High School. The honored students were invited to attend the August 1st Meeting of the Lord Baltimore Lions where they and their parents were formally introduced by Lions Scholarship Committee Chair Tom Roth.

The students, awarded the $1,500 Lions Club scholarships toward support of their first year of college, are Joud Dabaj, Nathaniel McCabe and Samantha Whelen. These scholarship winners were selected by members of the LBLC Scholarship Committee based  on  factors that included academics, financial need, and participation in extracurricular activities in both school and community. Since the Lions Club stands for dedication and support to community service in at least  5 key areas, the committee placed the greatest scoring on how these winners each fared in the area of “Community Service.”

Each of the scholarship winners plan to attend the University of Delaware in September. The students spoke about plans for the future.  They each shared an initial interest in a specific career goal, as Joud spoke about her interest in the sciences with plans to be a doctor; Nathaniel expressed interest in Business with a focus on Accounting; and Samantha shared her plans for a career in Education as a Special Education Teacher.

The Lord Baltimore Lions Club would like to thank all of the students who submitted applications as part of the 2018 Scholarship competition. The selection and award of Scholarship recipients is determined by a committee made up of members of the Lord Baltimore Lions Charities, Inc.

The Committee reviews all applications submitted.

No names are provided to the Selection Committee.

The Scholarships are based on community service as well as academic achievements (grades, class rank, GPA, extracurricular activities), and financial need.  The Chairman does not vote as he has knowledge of the applicants’ names.  The Chairman is responsible to ensure that the Committee selecting the recipients does not know the identity of the candidates.

The Committee selects three students who will be recognized equally.

Each student will be awarded a one time scholarship of $1,500.

Funds will be provided at the beginning of the freshman year.  Before any money is distributed, the Lord Baltimore Lions Charities, Inc. must receive a letter (copy) of admission from the college along with the address where to send payment and student I.D. no., if available.  This should be mailed directly to: Lord Baltimore Lions Charities, Inc., ATTN:  Scholarship Committee Chairman, P. O. 525, Ocean View, DE 19970.  When this information is received by the Committee, a check will be issued to the college.

Scholarship recipients are awarded their recognition at the Annual Awards Night held at Indian River High School in May.  The Scholarship Chairman or the Lions Club President will attend and make the presentations.  The general membership of the Lord Baltimore Lions Club will be informed of the winners at the next business meeting after the assembly.

Scholarship recipients and parents will be invited to a Club Dinner Meeting to express their future goals and speak about their chosen college.
