Republic day celebrated
Club celebrated the 63rd Republic day (on 26.1.2012) at Savoniya Sikhyashrama, Lathikata and Shanti Bhawan. At Lathikata Lion B Pradhan Past President and Lion Trilok Tripathy attended the function and at Shanti Bhawan, President Lion Bijay Chauhan, Lion P Karunakaran Past President & Lion P K Moorthy attended. At Savoniya Sikhyashrama parade ground, Lion B Pradhan hoisted the National Flag and received salute from the teams participated in the march past. The students also presented cultural and patriotic programmes organised in the parade ground. On this occasion he distributed three months scholarships money to five children viz Ms Atulya Barwa, Ms Gita Mundari, Ms Usha Tigga, Ms Sasmita Tirkey and Sri Rahul K Singh. Lion Pradhan addressed the children and others present in the celebration. At the end snacks packets and chocolate were distributed to the children. Approximately three hundred children, Nira bhai, Dr Kalpalata Devi and Mr. Mahakud along with other teachers and staff were present in the function. Mr Satish Patnaik of L&T ECC division graced the occasion as guest of honour and encouraged the children.
52nd Charternite ceremony held
Lions Club of Rourkela, The first lions club of Odisha celebrated its 52nd Charter nite function on 22.11.2011. Having sponsored by Lions club of Ranchi, this club was chartered on 22nd November 1960 and since then it has completed 51years of service to the society. The function was held at Rourkela Club, where District Governor Lion Mahesh Ch. Jethliya was the Chief Guest and 2nd Vice District Governor Lion Padma Charan Nayak was the Guest of honour. Past District Governor Lion G Vasudevan Nair, Zone Chair person Lion Sanjay Agarwal also attended the function. The programme started with reading of invocation, peace prayer, lighting up ceremonial lamp, floral tribute to Melvin Jones, the founder of lionism and inaugural song.
President Lion Bijay Chauhan welcomed the audience, while secretary Lion P Sreenivasan read out the club activity report. During the function, Vice District Governor and District Governor addressed the club members. Five new members were inducted to the lions club which will strengthen the service activities of the club. To mark the occasion annual souvenir “Lions Roar” edited by Lion Bhimasen Pradhan was released by the Chief Guest. Also lions club of Rourkela honoured an eminent social worker Mr Narender Singh Kalha of Sector-16, who has donated blood 112 times till date. Lion Ritesh Mittal and Lion S P Hemani were felicitated for their consent to become Utkalion fellow and MJF respectively. A number lions friends of neighbouring clubs present in this function felicitated the club. Lion Jagjit Singh proposed a formal vote of thanks. Lion Jaspal Singh Chhabra was the master of ceremony.
Earlier in the morning the District Governor had visited to our permanent projects at Special & Juvenile jail, Leo club at NIT Rourkela, Lakshya cultural and welfare Trust, Jagda, Drinking water project at Koel Nagar, associated schools Savoniya Sikhyashrama at Lathikata and Kalunga Shilpanchal School. Lions club of Rourkela distributed Scholarship and Sports material at these schools respectively. District Governor declared to sanction 50 % of borewell expenditure at Savoniya Sikhyashrama, Lathikata. DG Lion Jethliya chaired a special board of Directors meeting held at Brahmani club, interacted with the board members, reviewed the service activities and inspected the various accounts/ documents of the club.
Gandhi Jayanti Celebration
On 2nd October 2011, on the occasion Mahatma Gandhi's Birtday, Lions club of Rourkela distributed dress material (Bermuda and T shirts) at Juvenile Jail to all its inmates. During the function President Lion Bijay Chauhan, Secretary Lion P Sreenivasan and Vice President Lion Sajan Agarwal and officials of the jail were present.
Independence Day Celebration by Lions club of Rourkela
Lions club of Rourkela observed the 65th Independence Day today at its associated school Savoniya Sikyashrama Lathikata, Lakshya Cultural trust Jagda and at Juvenile jail Rourkela simultaneously.
Club President Lion Bijay Kumar Chauhan unfurled the tricolor at Savoniya Sikhyashrama play ground and witnessed the march past. After the march past the students presented various cultural programmes and Lion Chauhan addressed the children as well as the staff. Approximately 300 students were present during the celebration. Scholarship to the students for four months (May to August 2011) was distributed. This followed by distribution of snacks packets to the children. Mr. Satish Patnaik head of Administration and Accounts of M/s L & T was also present in this function along with two of his colleagues. From lions club the first lady Lion Kalyani Chauhan, Past Presidents Lion B Pradhan and Lion P Karunakaran also attended the function. Sri Patnaik showed his gratitude to lions club for associating L& T with this school.
To mark the occasion twenty fruits saplings were planted in the premises of the Sikhyashrama. There after the children enacted the teaching process through dance and songs and Nira Bhai presented a brief sketch of Pujyashree Kumar Bhai and genesis of Sovaniya movement. The first lady Lion Kalyani Chauhan donated Rs 2000/- to Sikhyashrama to distribute fruits amongst the children.
Flag hoisting was done at Lakshya cultural and welfare trust premises by Lion Sunita Sreenivasan. Approximately 70 students were present in the function and Lion Sunita and Lion Suresh Mallick addressed them. The children presented cultural programme and this followed by distribution of sweets and fruits. Trust secretary Mrs. Prusty, past president Lion Deepak Chandan, Secretary Lion P Sreenivasan and Lion Niraj Mallick were present during the function.
At Rourkela Juvenile jail, on the occasion of Independence Day, breakfast for all the 47 inmates was organised by our club. Idly, Sambhar, chutney and biscuits were distributed. From our club Past President Lion Vipul Hemani, IPP Lion Sanjaya Agarwal, Vice President Lion Sajan Agarwal, Lion Trilok Tripathy and Lion U N Pandey coordinated the programme. Club organised Accupresure and Magnet Therapy camp
Lions club of Rourkela organised a week long accupressure and magnet therapy camp at Haryana Bhawan Main road Rourkela. The camp started on 31st July 2011 and continued till 6th August 2011. The programme was managed by a team of six doctors from Rajasthan is open from 8AM to 1PM and 4PM to 8PM daily. A large number of patients were treated daily in the camp.
Similarly the camp was organised at Koel nagar from 8th Aug 2011 to 13th Aug 2011 in the premises of RSP retired employees' association building. A large number patients from the locality took advantage of this.
Club officials attended District Cabinet Installation at Cuttack

During these two days programme the PSTs were imparted training on various subjects and also the first cabinet meeting was also held. Past International director Lion Bishnu Bajoria inaugurated the ceremony and International Director Lion Narendra Bhandari installed the District Cabinet team of DG Lion Mahesh Ch Jethliya. Dr Ved Prakash Mishra of Nagpur was the Key note speaker on this occasion.
IPDG Ln Gopinath Mohanty organised an award ceremony after the cabinet installation. Our club and club members bagged seven awards.

52nd Installation ceremony of Lions club of Rourkela held
On 26th June 2011, the 52nd installation ceremony of Lions club of Rourkela held at Indo-German Club, Sector-2, Rourkela. Lion Basant Kumar Mishra, MJF Past District Governor of Dist 323C was the Chief Guest cum Installation Officer. Distinct Governor (Elect) Lion Mahesh Chandra Jethliya and 2nd District Governor (Elect) Lion Padma Charan Nayak were the Guests of honour on this occasion.
After invocation, Leo pledge, flag salutation and peace prayer the Chief Guest and Guests lighted up of ceremonial lamp, and paid floral tribute to Melvin Jones, the founder of lionism and the ceremony was inaugurated. Lion ladies presented a prayer song. President Lion Sanjay Agarwal welcomed the audience which followed by address of Installation Ceremony Chairperson, Lion Bhimasen Pradhan. Lion and Leo Secretaries read out their annual service / activities reports.
Lion R C Malhotra introduced 2nd VDG (Elect) Lion P C Nayak and this followed by address of Lion Nayak. Subsequently DG (Elect) Lion Jethliya addressed the audience. Next, Lion Jagjit Singh introduced Chief Guest and this followed by the address of the later and installation of Office Bearers. One by one he invited the nominated lion members and described their roles and responsibilities of each and installed them. President handed over the Gong and Gavel (the symbol of authority) to newly installed President Lion Bijay Chauhan and then Past President Lion Sanjay Agarwal escorted him to the dais.
After this, ZC ( Mrs) Lion Mamata Gautam and ZC (Designate) Lion Sanjay Agarwal congratulated the new team of office bearers during their addresses. On this occasion the fourth news letter of the club (May-June 2011 issue) was released by the Chief Guest. Invited Lion members from the neighbouring clubs felicitated the newly installed team.
Secretary, Lion P Sreenivasan proposed a formal vote of thanks and after the National Anthem the meeting was closed by President Lion Chauhan.
Lion B Pradhan meets Tuticorin-City lions club members
On 30th January 2011, while Lion B Pradhan was at Tuticorin, Tamilnadu met members of Tuticorincity Lions club (club no 97751 of district 324-B4 ). IPP Lion M Murugaboobathy, MJF and secretary Lion N Sivasubramanian, MJF along with their friend Mr. A S Kumaravel came down to hotel where Lion Pradhan was staying. They discussed about various lionism activities both at club and district levels. Lion B Pradhan handed over copies of club newsletter Lions Roar to all of them. IPP Lion Boopathy presented a district directory of 324-B4 to Lion Pradhan.
This was really a memorable lionistic experience.
District Governor’s official visit
and the 51st Charternite held
District Governor Lion Gopinath Mohanty, MJF had visited Lions club of Rourkela on the 24th January 2011 on the occasion of the 51st Charternite celebration and had his official visit also. Lions club of Rourkela was chartered on 22.11.1960 and is in its 51st year of service to the community.
DG arrived at Rourkela by Tapaswini express in the morning and after a short break, set for his visit at 10.30am to our permanent projects along with club president, secretary, Region Chairperson Ln Basant K Todi, Zone Chairperson Ln Mamta Gautam, Club PRO Lion B Pradhan, PP Lion P Karunakaran. The first project to visit was Savoniya Sikhyashrama at Lathikata where after a heart touching welcome by the students, there were welcome addresses, cultural events, yoga exercises etc. by the tiny students. Secretary Nira Bhai told about the Sovaniya movement and about founder Pujyashree Kumar Bhai. DG interacted with the children and appreciated the association of lions in this noble cause. Lions club of Rourkela declared on this occasion to donate a water purifier (Aqua- guard) to this school.
Then DG visited our newly associated Silpanchal School at Kalunga. Thirty steel benched have been provided to this school by our club this year. It fulfills the requirement of classes from III to VII. DG here also interacted with the governing body members and the teachers and acknowledged the requirement of the school. He advised the teachers for ensuring proper care to the saplings planted by the club. Phase wise for rest of the classes, benches will be provided. Some more lion members viz. Lion C S Chandan, Lion Bijay Chauhan and Lion J S Chhabra joined the team and DG was escorted to our Homeopathic clinic at Kuanrmunda. Dr U P Dit welcomed the District Governor and briefed about the clinic and the service rendered to the patients. DG noted his remark on the visitor’s book.
After this the Special BoD meeting was held at Brahmani Club over lunch. All the board members present were introduced to the Governor and respective chairpersons presented their report. DG briefed about various activities of the district, discussed about MJF and Utkalion members strength in the club. He requested president Lion Sanjay Agarwal to increase not only this but also the strength of the club.
The onward visit to club projects continued after the lunch with visit to drinking water project at Koel Nagar followed by visit to Lakshya cultural & welfare trust Jagda and finally to Leo club of Rourkela at National Institute of Technology. Chairman Lion Deepak Chandan briefed the DG about these projects and DG interacted with the beneficiaries as well as with the Leos. Leo Rajesh Goel explained the activities of Leo club through a power point presentation over the years. It is not out of place to mention that Leo club of Rourkela was establishes on 16th July 1975 and is one of the pioneers Leo club of the district. Seventeen Leos of the club participated in the Leo meet held at Puri during 14-16 Jan 2011. With this the visit was concluded and DG was escorted back to Rourkela house at 5.30PM.
The Charternite Function.
It was held at Rourkela club mail hall and started at 8PM. DG Lion Gopinath Mohanty, VDG-I Lion Mahesh Jethliya, PDG Lion Vasudevan, RC Lion Basant K Todi, ZC Lion Mamta Gautam were invited and escorted to the dais. After invocation and lighting of ceremonial lamp, ladies sang a peace prayer and rose buds were presented to the guests.
Charternite chairperson Lion Vipul Hemani addressed the audience and president Lion Sanjay Agarwal welcomed. Subsequently ZC, RC and PDG addressed the audience. Prior to speeches by VDG and DG, they were introduced by Lion Niraj Mallick and lion C S Chandan respectively. During their speeches the guests appreciated the long 51 years service rendered by the club and also expressed their gratitude to the 34 charter members who were instrumental in spreading lionism in Odisha.

In addition award winner of peace poster contest was given away the prize and also the first prize money to our Lucky coupon draw was handed over. DG handed over appreciation award to Lion C S Chandan for sponsoring two members last year, bannerette/ lion pins to PST, cabinet members etc. This followed by releasing of second volume of club newsletter Lions Roar. DG released this while Lion B Pradhan editor assisted him.
Earlier DG inducted four new members to the club namely Lion S S Uppal, Lion Soni Chandan, Lion Ranju Mallik and Lion Taranpreet Kaur .
Then it was turn for felicitation by neighbouring clubs members. Lion P C Nayak, Lion Archana Murarka, Lion R N Kabi, Lion Sandeep Gautam, Lion J P Agarwal and many others congratulated the club for 51st charter function. After vote of thanks the meeting was concluded and children of Lakshya cultural & welfare trust presented a beautiful cultural programme.
Lion Jaspal Singh Chhabra and Lion Rashmi Khemani were the master of ceremony. The programme followed by a fellowship dinner at 10.15 PM.
RC & ZC visited Lions club of Rourkela
As re-scheduled, the first regular meeting of the club was held on the 13th December 2010 at Indo German Club, Sec-2. During the meeting Region Chairperson R-1, Ln Basant Kumar Todi and Zone Chairperson Z-1, R-1 Lion Mamta Gautam visited our club. They went through the club documents and reviewed the service activities.
At the outset they were welcomed with presentation of rose bud and were introduced by Lion Jagjit Singh and Lion Latha Karunakaran. Lion Gautam shared her experience at Regional leadership institute, Kaziranga held in November 2010. RC also addressed the club members and appreciated the club activities. PRO cum bulletin editor Lion B Pradhan handed over a set of souvenirs of last three years to both RC & ZC. Treasurer Lion Mittal proposed a formal vote of thanks.
Lions club of Rourkela releases newsletter :
On 4th October 2010, the first quarterly newsletter of the club "Lions Roar" was released by Lion Jaspal Singh Chhabra. This 16 page newsletter contains apart from news from our club, region and district also our club goal, list of committee chair persons, list of our projects and also list of members. At the front page, there is a obituary to our charter member lion P L Agarwal. A copy of the newsletter was distributed to all the persons present in the meeting. Editor, Lion B Pradhan informed the members that he is exploring the possibility of circulating the soft copy of newsletter from this issue.
The first regular meeting of the month was held on the 4th October at Indo-German Club, sector-2. The meeting was called to order by the President and invocation was read out by Lion B Pradhan. President Ln Agarwal informed that a mega health check up camp would be held on 10th October 2010 in civil township near Vesaj Patel hospital in collaboration with Jan Sevak Mandal, Rourkela. During the meeting 8 Leo members also attended and presented report on their activities. They informed that total 45 units of blood were donated by the leos during last three months at IGH & CWS hospital.
During the meeting each member was also distributed with a copy of district directory for the current year. The meeting was followed by a quiz organised by the first lady Lion Shakun Agarwal.
Club donated furnitures to Shilpanchal School
On 22.08.2010, Lions club of Rourkela handed over 12 benches for class room to SHILPANCHAL SCHOOL IDC KALUNGA. On the same day it organised a tree Plantation programme held at school premises by planting 10 Nos of tree and provided with Tree Guards. At the end of the programme biscuits packet were also distributed among school children. From our club Lion President Sanjay Agarwal, First lady Lion Shakun Agarwal, Secretary Lion Mohan Tripathy, Board of Director Lion Vipul Hemani, Ln. C.S. Chandan, Ln. P. Sreenivasan, 2nd V.P Ln. Jagjit Singh,3rd V.P. Ln. Rajesh Malhotra, Membership Director. Ln. Jaspal Singh Chhabra, Tail Tamer Ln. Suresh Hemani, Jt. Treasurer Ln. Sunita Sreenivasan, Lioness Sony Chandan, and Fund raising chairman Ln. Sajan Agarwal have participated in this programme.
