I am honored to serve as the president of the Saddle River Valley Lions as we write another chapter in the Club’s proud history and celebrate our Diamond Jubilee this 2017-2018 Lions year. Granted its charter by Lions Club International on December 3, 1957, the Club held its Charter Night meeting on January 13, 1958. Now, sixty years later, we are stronger than ever!

Joining me as club officers this year are Lions George Lesnik (1st Vice President), Eugene Baskayan (2nd Vice President), Mark Stephan (3rd Vice President), Bob May (Secretary), Paul Beck (Charities Treasurer), Andy Calcara (Club Treasurer), and Directors Dennis Schubert, Wilfredo Gonzales, Jim Murphy, Paula Turrin, and Christopher Reichert.

As a regional club, Saddle River Valley Lions supports, and is supported by, the communities of Allendale, Mahwah, Ramsey, Saddle River, and Upper Saddle River. Since its founding, the Club has raised and donated over $2,350,000 to charities, community organizations, and schools. Our charitable goals include, but aren’t limited to, sight conservation, civic activities, human services, youth programs, and education. Classified as a 501C(3) non-profit entity, 100% of its net proceeds go directly to the groups that the Club supports with none of the funds raised being used to meet administrative expenses, a cost borne by the Lions themselves.

The dollars that make possible our contributions to these worthwhile causes are raised primarily through our three annual fundraisers. The first, the Herb Bodensiek Annual Golf Classic is held each September. This is followed in the spring by the sale of tickets for our Car Raffle, the winner of which is drawn on the last night of our third fundraiser, our Carnival. Held in Upper Saddle River’s Lions Park, this year’s Carnival will open on Tuesday, May 29, 2018 and run through Saturday, June 2, 2018.

The Lions sincerely appreciate and thank the people throughout Saddle River Valley for being so unstinting in their support of our many endeavors. It is their help that makes possible what we do.

We would like to extend our special thanks to all those who helped make this past Spring’s Carnival our best ever! Included here is everyone who attended the Carnival, our business sponsors whose generous contributions helped us in paying our operating expenses, and the Borough of Upper Saddle River for the use of Lions Memorial Park. We are especially grateful to the many residents who volunteered to help us run the games of chance as well as to Upper Saddle River’s Police Department, Department of Public Works, Volunteer Ambulance Corps, Volunteer Fire Department, and the U.S.R. Construction Official’s Office for collectively helping to ensure that we once again had a clean, safe Carnival.

As President, I am proud of this club's accomplishments and have the unique privilege in working with our dedicated members, volunteers, residents, and community partners who support our efforts to serve those in our communities who are in need.

I look forward to your continued support of our charitable fundraising efforts and community event activities. If you or someone you know is interested in information about Lions Club membership or more about what we do, please contact us either via our website or our Facebook page.

Thank you very much.

Yours sincerely,

David C. Verducci, Ph.D.
