Shelby Lions Club Announces $1,000 Senior Scholarship Program
 
The  Shelby  Lions  Club  is  offering a  one thousand dollar scholarship  to  a  student at  Shelby  High  School.    They   will select  six  "Lions of the Month" throughout the school year based on
community involvement, financial need, and academic achievement.     Each Lion of the Month will be invited, along with his/her parents to a Shelby Lions Club dinner meeting the 4th Tuesday
at Deer Brook Golf Club as honorary guests.
 
Shelby Lions Club will select a  scholarship winner from the six students based on personal interviews and an essay on "Why Community Service is Important."
 
The scholarship will be presented at the Shelby High School awards banquet. 

 

Shelby Lions Club Honors Two  Area  High  School  Students

The  Shelby  Lions  Club  has  honored  two  area  high  school  students  at  their  meeting  Tuesday,  October  25th.   Taylor  Sweat,  a  junior  at  Thomas  Jefferson  Classical  Academy,  is  the  winner  of  the  North  Carolina  Celebrate  Liberty  Essay  Contest,  sponsored  by  the  Lions.    Eleventh  grade  students  at  the  Academy  were  invited  to  write  about  a  quote  from  Thomas  Jefferson,  "The  democracy  will  cease  to  exist  when you  take  away  from  those  willing  to  work  and  give  it  to  those  who  would  not.    It  is  incumbent  on every  generation  to  pay  its own debts  as  it  goes."  Lion  Gerald  Weathers  presented  Taylor  with  a  plaque  and a  check  for  fifty  dollars.    Her winning essay now advances to district competition.    Taylor  is  the  daughter  of  Holly  and  Dan  Sweat  of  Boiling  Springs.  Also,  the  Lions  recognized  Ryan  Janes  as  Shelby  High  School  student  of  the  month.  Ryan, a senior, is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Dennis Jaynes and plans to attend college after graduation.  He  and  other  students-of-the-month   are  now  in  competition  for  a  Lions  Club Scholarship. Both students were accompanied by their parents at the meeting.

 

 Winner of Shelby Lions Club N.C.  Liberty  Essay  Contest Wins  Lions  District 31-A Competition

Taylor Sweat,   winner  of  the  Shelby  Lions  Club    N.C.  Liberty  Essay  

Contest,  has   now  won  the  Lions  District  31-A   Competition.   She 

and  her  parents,   Holly  and  Dan  Sweat  of  Boiling Springs,  will  travel 

to  the  district  cabinet  meeting  in  Asheville  Saturday,  November  19th, 

where  she  will  read  her  essay  and  receive  a  cash  award.   Taylor  is 

a  Junior  at  Thomas  Jefferson  Classical  Academy  in  Henrietta. 

Eleventh graders  at  that  school  were  invited  to write  an  essay   about

Shelby Lions Club recognizes 2011 Peace Poster Contest Winner

The Shelby Lions Club has recognized 13 year old Tori Owens as winner of its 2011 Peace Poster Contest, held in cooperation with the Boys and Girls Clubs of Shelby. There were nine entries with a theme of "Children Know Peace."   At the Lions Club meeting Tuesday, November 8th,  Lion Barbara Fitch presented Tori with a certificate and a check for fifty dollars.  Her poster now goes to Lions Club International Competition for a chance to win five thousand dollars to be presented in a ceremony at Lions Day at the United Nations in March, 2012.   Tori is an eighth grader at Shelby Middle School and the daughter of Michael and Cynthia Owens.   Her family accompanied her to the Lions meeting. The program at the November 7th Lions meeting was presented by Brittney Hooker, the Boys and Girls Club Youth of the Year.   A senior and an honor student at Shelby High, Brittney served as Lady Lion Mascot for the Shelby Golden Lions; is a choir member at Shiloh Baptist Church; and is active in the Math Academy.   She has recently begun her first job as an academic tutor at the Boys and Girls Club. She plans to attend Winston Salem State University

 

President of Shelby Lions Club Elected 2nd Vice District Governor for District 31-A

The President of the Shelby Lions Club, Dave Titus, has been elected 2nd Vice District Governor for Lions  District  31-A.   His  election came during the Lions Cabinet  Meeting  during  the  District  Fall  Convention  in  Asheville,  November  18th  and  19th.  On the current track,  Lion  Titus  will be District Governor in 2014 - 2015.   The last time a  member  of  the  Shelby  Lions Club became  a  District Governor was 1982 - 1983 when Freddie Harris served in that position. District 31A covers Western North Carolina and represents Cleveland and Lincoln Counties and all points West including 54 Lions Clubs.

Shelby Lions Club Plants Trees

Shelby  Lions  Club  and  Shelby  Community  Lions  Club  members  have  planted  50  dogwood  seedlings  at  Shelby  Middle  School  and   Shelby  Intermediate  School.

 The  plantings  were  part  of  a  worldwide  effort  by  Lions  Clubs  International  to  assist  the  environment.     Lions  across  the  globe  had  a  goal  of  planting  one  million trees,  but  so  far  have  planted  six  million.

 Shelby Lions Club Perfect Attendance

Shelby  Lions  Club  President  David  Titus  congratulates  Lion  Yancey  Ellis,  one  of  several  Lions  to  receive  a  perfect  attendance  pin for  2010-2011.  Ellis  has  been  a   Lion  for  58  years  and  has  had  perfect  attendance  for  38  of  those  years.  The  presentation  was  made at  the  Valentine's  Banquet  of  the  Shelby  Lions  Club.

 Shelby Lions Club Honors Student of the month

 The   Shelby Lions   Club has  honored  Jaron  Webber  as  student-of-the-month.  A  senior at  Shelby High,  he  plans  to  attend either  East  Carolina  University;  Winston  Salem  State  University;  or  University  of  North  Carolina  at  Greensboro.  Jaron is  the  son  of  Jimmy  and   Debbie Webber.  His  grandfather,  Joe  Webber,  accompanied  him  for  the  February  28th  Lions  Club  meeting.  As  a  student-of-the-month,  Jaron  becomes  a  candidate  for  a  scholarship  to  be  awarded  by  the  club  at  the  end  of  the school  year.  The winner  will  be  selected  from  the  students-of-the-month.
